Four golfers with state experience return for Goessel High School in the 2012 season. Shane Goerzen, Trey Schmidt, Braden Unruh, and Davis Cook have memories of playing at Emporia in the 1A State Tournament.
As a team, the Bluebirds finished eighth out of 12 teams. This year’s state meet will be at the Highlands Country Club in Hutchinson.
“There are a lot more spectators at the state meet which creates a lot of fun,” Schmidt said. “We should do well in the Wheat State League.”
Goerzen and Schmidt led the team with the best scores at the state meet a year ago.
Chad Lindeman will lead the team as a first year coach this year. He will work with 14 athletes, some trying to learn the game of golf and others trying to earn a spot on the varsity team. Stephen Goertzen, Dan Smucker, and Tyler Schulz also return as letter winners from last year’s team, making the prospects look good for another season. Unruh and Goertzen are the only seniors.
The Bluebirds begin the season April 3 at Herington.
