Girls win homecoming game

Two home games for the Peabody-Burns girls’ basketball team produced one win and one loss this past week. On Feb. 5, the squad was defeated by Remington, 42-33. On Friday, the team earned a homecoming victory over Goessel, 35-29. The Warriors played Little River Tuesday on senior night at home. Friday the team will travel to Moundridge.

Remington

Both offenses started slow. Remington had the three-point edge, 8-5, at the buzzer. Brianna Larsen led with four points. Brandee Burnett added a free throw.

An even second quarter produced 11 points for each team. Rayna Barnes had six in the period. Rylie McDowell added a 3-pointer. Burnett scored a basket. PBHS trailed, 19-26, at halftime.

PBHS added 13 points in the third quarter but Goessel added 14. PBHS trailed, 33-29, at the end of the quarter.

Barnes led with four points. Burnett, Paige Lewis and McKenzie Ensminger each added three.

Ensminger had four points in the fourth quarter for the PBHS squad. Remington added 9.

Barnes led the Warriors with 10 points followed by Ensminger with seven and Burnett with six.

Goessel

PBHS took the lead, 11-4, after one quarter. Barnes and Lewis each had four points. Burnett added three.

Goessel came back to outscore PBHS, 9-6, in the second. PBHS still had the edge at halftime, 17-13.

Burnett, Larsen and Barnes each had two points.

A single basket by Lewis was all the PBHS squad scored until the last minute of the fourth. Goessel put together a string of points and came back to tie the game at 19 with 2 minutes left in the third. A trey gave Goessel their first lead in the second half. Barnes scored back-to-back baskets to give the Lady Warriors a one-point margin, 23-22, going into the final period.

Barnes was tough in the fourth adding 10-of-12 PBHS points. Lewis scored a basket. Goessel added seven in the quarter.

Barnes led the Warriors with 20 points followed by Lewis with eight and Burnett with five.
