EXPANDED EULOGIES

Galen Obermeyer

A private tribute is planned for Galen Scott Obermeyer, 66, of Marion, who died unexpectedly of a heart attack Sept. 14, 2021.

Born Jan. 3, 1955, Galen was the second son of Virgil and Evelyn Obermeyer of Peabody. He attended Peabody schools and Emporia State University.

Galen is best known as a talented, self-taught guitarist, singer, composer, and guitar instructor. He also was an avid nature photographer.

He began his musical path on his father’s hand-me-down guitar at age 7. Galen played guitar and sang in several bands, most recently Area 51, Justus Rockin’ Country, and as a duo with Doug Kjellin.

Galen loved nature and was happiest hiking on the family farm or while camping at the lake.

Those left to honor and remember Galen include three brothers, Kirby, Mark (and wife Marlene), and Brian (and wife Gwen); a nephew, Edward “E.J.”; his best friend, companion, and “plus-one,” Debbie Spangler Johnson; and Randy, his beloved dog.

Galen was preceded in death by his parents, Virgil and Evelyn.

Galen will be remembered as a sincere, kind, and giving person who was most at ease sharing companionship while playing his guitar.

In lieu of flowers and memorials, donations can be made to: gofundme.com/f/Galen-Obermeyer-Tribute-Music-and-Canine-Care-Fund. Funds will support music education for students and for low-cost veterinary canine care in Marion County.

“Galen sang and played from the heart, a heart that could understand and feel the whole gamut of human emotions and feelings.”
