Frostbite Fun Run is Jan. 1

Staff writer

Kelly Linnens of Hillsboro looks forward to the Frostbite Four Mile Fun Run each New Year’s Day as a way to start his year on the right foot.

“It’s just a good time to get out and start your resolution,” he said.

It is also an opportunity for fellowship with other runners.

“You don’t have to win the race to satisfy your goal,” Linnens said.

He particularly looks forward to the upcoming run as the first step training for a half marathon. He wants to run a half marathon because his wife, Julie, completed one in October.

“A 4-mile run is not a long way,” he said.

Randy Wiens and Bob Woelk organized the first Frostbite Run in 2007 with help from Doug Sisk and Hillsboro Recreation Department.

“We just thought we needed to do something on New Year’s Day to get active and get off the couch,” Wiens said.

The run isn’t intended as a competitive race, he added.

Runners should be careful not to overdress, Linnens said. Getting warm enough that you sweat then getting cold is a bigger risk than being uncomfortably cool, he said. A good way to judge proper clothing is if you’re uncomfortably cool waiting to begin, you will warm up to about right during the run, he said.

Runners will meet at the Scout House at Memorial Park. The run begins at 2 p.m. Jan. 1, and the entry fee is $10. Runners who register by Saturday will receive a running cap. The registration form is available online at http://www.usd410.net/frostbite2011.pdf. Walk-up registration is allowed.
