Fred Hein

A memorial service for Manfred K. “Fred” Hein, 86, Newton, who passed away peacefully Sept. 11, 2026, will be held 11 a.m. Oct. 3, 2026, at Crossings Community Church, 620 Fairview Ave., Newton.

Fred was born April 13, 1940, in Augsburg, Germany, to Johann and Theresa Krappman.

He moved to the United States at age 15 when he was lovingly adopted by Melvin and Marie Hein, who raised him on a farm near Durham.

He later settled in Newton, where he built a life rooted in hard work, devotion, and a deep love for his family.

On March 12, 1977, he married his soulmate, Millie Rose, and together they created a home filled with faith, laughter, and unwavering commitment.

Fred worked for 24 years at Coleman before retiring. He was known for his reliability, strong work ethic, and willingness to always do his part.

He was an active member of First Church of God, where he lived out his faith with sincerity and humility.

A dedicated father to Michael, Robin, and Patty, Fred poured his heart into his family.

He was a devoted grandfather who rarely missed a sporting event, school program, or milestone.

His grandchildren were the joy of his life, and he showed up for them in every way that mattered. His love and support will be remembered in countless memories and cherished moments.

Fred found happiness in many hobbies. His model train collection was his pride, and he was an enthusiastic member of a local train club.

He also enjoyed playing pool, fishing, visiting model plane and radio-controlled car groups around town, and spending time with his beloved dog, Spangles.

Above all, Fred was a man of strong faith in Christ, and his faith was a guiding part of his life.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his beloved wife, Millie.

Fred is survived by his sister, Rita Galyardt, along with a nephew and two nieces, and his children, Michael (and Ian) Collins, Robin (and Russell) Stewart, and Patricia Laird.

He also leaves behind his grandchildren, Melissa Antonaccio, Zoe (and Matt) Wennberg, Zach (and Sarahfae) Collins, Linsey (and Jonathan) Foth, Hunter (and Hannah) Collins, Levi (and Sumer) Laird, Demi Collins, Brandon Birzer, and Tiffany (and Shawn) Walker, as well as 13 great-grandchildren.

Fred will be deeply missed by his family, friends, church community, and all who were blessed to know him.

His love, faith, dedication, and presence in the lives of those around him will be carried on through the many people and memories he leaves behind.
