Fountains being prepared to flow

Staff writer

Fountains in Marion’s Central Park are being prepared to be filled and turned on.

Public works director Tim Makovec said Tuesday that the smaller fountain, with a newly installed bathing swan sculpture has been cleaned and will be flowing soon.

“They are getting it going,” Makovec said. “It depends on how fast it fills. By tomorrow, it should be up and running.”

A stone has been set on the ground near the fountain in honor of Bula Good, whose family donated the swan sculpture in memory of her.

The new, larger fountain will require more work, he said.

“It’s going to be painted, and then it will be up and running,” Makovec said.

City administrator Roger Holter said the fountain was pressure-washed Monday and would be primed and painted.

Crews are shooting for the weekend to have the fountain on.

“The big one is not in the greatest shape but it’s not leaking,” Makovec said.

Holter said Marion Advancement Campaign recently voted to make the large fountain its next project.

The group plans to replace the fountain’s electrical system and install new LED lighting.

The family for Wharton Hoch has pledged matching funds up to $5,000 for the project, Holter said.
