FFA students win food competition
Centre FFA members Allie Stuchlik, Olivia Carlson, Jenna Bittle, and Jenaya Plett placed first out of 25 teams in a food science category at district career development competitions last week in Lyons.
Marion’s FFA team finished 14th out of 20 in the Greenhand (freshman) division of the competition.
Individually, Marion FFA member Christopher Beery placed second in agri-business management.
Centre’s agri-business team placed third overall. Its Greenhand team also placed third.
Participants were tested about management principles and strategies related to marketing, income statements, balance sheets, cash flow, and futures.
Marion placed seventh out of 18 teams in a poultry competition. Ella Mackey individually placed ninth.
Participants were required to evaluate ready-to-cook broiler carcasses, check for exterior defects in eggs, use candling to examine the interior of eggs, identify various cuts of chicken, grade eggs, and take a written test.
