FFA students place at poultry judging contest

A group of Peabody-Burns FFA animal science students participated Feb. 17 in the South Central District Poultry Judging contest in Marion.

“The A team did a great job and took fifth place,” adviser Glenn Bechtel said.

Team members were Zac Goodwin, Joe Partridge, and Nick Morgan. Individually, Morgan placed ninth and will compete at state in June.

“Our B team, Lance Hartley, Tommy Morris, and Lucas Larsen, came in just short of placing,” Bechtel said.

The students also participated in food science, which is tasting foods and deciding which is best and food aromas.

At the poultry contest, they judged past-production hens, processed meat, poultry cuts, interior egg, exterior egg, and whole carcass.

“This is important to the consumer to know that their food is being inspected and cared for thoroughly,” Bechtel said. “This kind of contest is the perfect way to start.”
