Family finds body 11 days after wreck

Family members succeeded Saturday in what a day-long search by law enforcement officers earlier in the week failed to accomplish.

Missing for 11 days, Florence resident Jason W. Hinton, 44, was found dead around 10:30 a.m. Saturday in the Cottonwood River near where his crashed Ford Ranger had been discovered April 5.

Sheriff Jeff Soyez said Hinton’s body was discovered about half a mile upstream from his crashed pickup, the body fully in the water.

Marion and Chase County authorities, family, and volunteers had been searching for Hinton since the crash was discovered around 7:30 p.m. April 5 on private property off US-50 between Clements and K-150, near Clover Cliff Ranch.

He was thought to have walked away from the accident. Damage to the truck was said to have been minor, and sheriff’s deputies found no evidence of injuries.

Relatives said he did not have a mobile phone.

Hinton was a Type 1 diabetic. When the wreck was discovered, no insulin was found in the pickup, and it was not known whether he had insulin with him.

Soyez said that when relatives found Hinton’s body Saturday, he did not have insulin with him.

A search-and-rescue team with dogs and Chase County sheriff’s deputies searched all day April 12 for Hinton. Additional searches were organized as recently as Friday and Saturday.

An autopsy has been ordered to determine cause of death.
