Family buys one-of-a-kind camper

Staff writer

No doubt heads will turn when Gene Lanning drives the family’s new camper into any RV slot.

The camper used to be a tour bus in Florida and has “Florida after dark” on a marquee over the windshield.

Lanning said he bought the camper, already converted, a few weeks ago from a man he used to coach in baseball.

The price was too good to beat.

Despite its long body, the camper will fit in an RV spot at a lake, he said.

“It’s got the same hookups as a normal camper,” Lanning said.

The family did have a camper, but didn’t use it because sporting events and school activities just didn’t permit time for weekends at the lake. He does plan to take the new camper to Milford Lake next summer.

Because it’s a bus, a CDL with air brake endorsement is required. Lanning has that, but was nevertheless nervous driving it home after he purchased it, he said as he replaced three batteries in the bus Thursday.

Inside the camper, a living area with sofas on each side flows into a kitchen. Behind that is a spacious bathroom, and after that the bedroom.
