Ernest E. Harlan

Ernest E. Harlan, 90, died Feb. 4, 2012, at Holiday Resort in Emporia.

He was born Jan. 11, 1922, on a farm north of Madison to Roy M. and Maggie Mae Claunch Harlan. He attended grade school at Rock Valley School and served in the U.S. Army during World War II, working on construction of the Alaskan Highway.

He worked in oil and gas fields most of his life and later worked in and retired from the City of Emporia Maintenance Department. He participated in an Honor Flight to Washington, D.C., in 2007.

He married Marjorie J. Hess on June 1, 1945, in Okmulgee, Okla. They had two children, Glenda Kay and Lester Lynn. His wife preceded him in death on Dec. 27, 1982.

He was also preceded in death by a sister, Zola Mae; and a grandson, Michael Harlan.

He is survived by a daughter, Glenda of Wichita; a son, Lester of Madison; three grandsons; and six great-grandchildren.

Funeral services are scheduled for 10 a.m. today at VanArsdale Funeral Home in Madison. Burial will follow services at Blakely Cemetery near Madison.
