Broadcasts about these fire and ambulance calls were monitored this past week by the newspaper:

DEC. 10

1:57 a.m. — A 38-year-old man with abdominal pain in the 500 block of Lombard St. in Lincolnville was taken to St. Luke Hospital, Marion, by Tampa ambulance. Lincolnville first responders provided initial evaluation of the patient.

4:33 a.m. — A 103-year-old woman who fell and may have hurt her hip at Marion Assisted Living was helped up by Marion ambulance attendants but declined to be taken to a hospital.

10:51 a.m. — A 78-year-old man with gastrointestinal bleeding was transferred by Hillsboro ambulance from Hillsboro Community Hospital to Wesley Medical Center, Wichita.

11:14 a.m. — Despite being evaluated as being in potentially serious condition, an 80-year-old woman with possible diabetic problems in the 100 block of S. Lincoln St., Marion, declined to be taken to a hospital by Marion ambulance.

2:57 p.m. — An 81-year-old man wanting to go to a hospital but unable to make it to a car near Alamo and 100th Rds. was taken to Mercy Hospital, Moundridge, by Hillsboro ambulance. A Goessel first responder provided initial evaluation.

3:32 p.m. — A 73-year-old woman with hip pain after a fall earlier in the day at Marion Assisted Living was taken to St. Luke by Marion ambulance.

5:40 p.m. — Despite being evaluated as being in potentially serious condition, a sometimes unresponsive 65-year-old man at a home in the 200 block of N. Adams St. in Hillsboro declined to be taken to a hospital by Hillsboro ambulance.

7:24 p.m. — An 89-year-old woman with stomach pain and dehydration at Marion Assisted Living was taken to St. Luke by Marion ambulance.

8:31 p.m. — An 86-year-old man who fell at an apartment in the 100 block of N. Washington St. in Hillsboro declined to be taken to a hospital by Hillsboro ambulance.

DEC. 11

1:32 a.m. — Smoke reportedly coming from a car that hit a deer on K-15 near 70th Rd. was determined by Goessel firefighters to be steam from a damaged radiator.

4:02 a.m. — A 38-year-old man having chest pains at a home in the 800 block of N. Walnut St. in Peabody declined to be taken to a hospital by Hillsboro ambulance. Marion ambulance also responded.

6:56 a.m. — An overheated space heater was blamed by Marion firefighters for smoke inside the Marion post office. Firefighters ventilated the building and noted that the heater’s circuit breaker had been tripped, preventing more serious damage.

7:11 a.m. — A 24-year-old man throwing up for several hours at a home in the 300 block of N. 3rd St. in Marion was taken to St. Luke by Marion ambulance.

9:22 p.m. — At the request of a sheriff’s deputy, Hillsboro ambulance checked but found no injuries among people involved in a traffic accident on K-15 near 130th Rd.

9:51 p.m. — A 99-year-old woman scheduled to go to St. Luke from a home in the 100 block of N. Cedar St. in Marion was taken there by Marion ambulance.

4:34 p.m. — A 61-year-old man with cancer who fell at a farmhouse near 210th and Falcon Rds. was taken to HCH by Hillsboro ambulance.

THURSDAY

5:37 a.m. — An 83-year-old woman with pain in her legs after being hospitalized for a urinary tract infection was taken by Marion ambulance to St. Luke from Sunrise Townhomes in Marion.

10:28 a.m. — An unresponsive 61-year-old man lying on a floor at Grand Oaks Apartments in Hillsboro was taken to NMC Health, formerly Newton Medical Center, by Hillsboro ambulance. Marion ambulance also responded, but its medics were told they would not be needed before they arrived. An ambulance supervisor responded, as well.

10:49 a.m. — A 64-year-old woman who thought she might have suffered a stroke at a home in the 100 block of W. Maple St. in Lost Springs was taken to Salina Regional Health Center by Tampa ambulance. Lincolnville first responders provided initial evaluation. An ambulance supervisor also responded from Hillsboro. Marion ambulance initially responded as well but was called off after it was determined sufficient crew members were available on Tampa ambulance. The ambulance returned to Tampa at 2:58 p.m.

4:30 p.m. — A 42-year-old man detoxifying from alcohol was transferred by Hillsboro ambulance from HCH to McPherson Center for Health. The ambulance returned to Hillsboro at 6:31 p.m.

FRIDAY

12:58 a.m. — A 77-year-old man who may have suffered a stroke at a home in the 600 block of N. Olive St. in Peabody was evaluated by Marion ambulance attendants as being in possibly serious condition but decided to go to a hospital in a private vehicle instead of the ambulance. The ambulance returned to Marion at 2:09 a.m.

1:02 p.m. — A 44-year-old woman having trouble breathing at a home in the 300 block of S. Roosevelt St. in Marion was taken to St. Luke by Marion ambulance. Hillsboro ambulance also responded, but medics were told they were not needed before they arrived.

8:09 p.m. — A 16-year-old girl who fell and hit her head while playing basketball at Goessel High School was taken to NMC Health by Hillsboro ambulance. Goessel first responders were paged but did not answer. The ambulance returned to Hillsboro at 9:51 p.m.

10:54 p.m. — A 77-year-old man who fell at a home near 240th and Indigo Rds. declined to be taken to a hospital by Hillsboro ambulance, but Hillsboro firefighters were called to help lift the man.

SATURDAY

11 a.m. — A propane odor in a house near 220th and Indigo Rds. was checked by Hillsboro firefighters who found no dangerous buildup of gas but shut off propane because of a potential problem that repair personnel were called to address.

4:30 p.m. — A medical alarm from a home in the 100 block of E. 9th St. in Florence was determined to be a false alarm before Marion ambulance arrived.

9:52 p.m. — A 38-year-old woman was killed, and two seriously injured 14-year-old boys were taken to Wesley by Hillsboro and Marion ambulances after the woman’s car slammed into a semi amid dense fog on US-56 at K-15/Bison Rd. Tampa ambulance attendants checked the uninjured semi driver and stood by in case firefighters directing traffic in fog were injured. Firefighters from Hillsboro, Lehigh, and Goessel helped light the scene, extricate victims, and divert traffic around the collision until nearly 3 a.m. They also probed the wreckage, walked the area on foot with a thermal camera, and piloted an infrared drone in a fruitless search for an additional victim who initially was thought to have been trapped in the wreckage or thrown from it. The last of the ambulances did not return to its quarters until 5:07 a.m.

SUNDAY

7:54 p.m. — Goessel firefighters were sent to help a 70-year-old man who fell at a home near 28th Ave. and Cimarron Rd. in McPherson County. A Moundridge ambulance also was dispatched.

MONDAY

2:01 a.m. — A 77-year-old man was transferred by Marion ambulance from St. Luke to Salina Regional. On the way back, the ambulance stopped at a traffic accident on I-135 and stayed with two injured people until a Lindsborg ambulance arrived. Marion ambulance returned to its station at 6:16 a.m.

7:29 a.m. — A 90-year-old woman who fell out of bed, hurt her head, and began having trouble breathing at a home in the 500 block of S. Lincoln St. in Hillsboro was taken by Hillsboro ambulance on an emergency basis to Ascension Via Christi St. Francis Hospital, Wichita. The ambulance returned to Hillsboro at 9:53 a.m.

12:26 p.m. — Hillsboro ambulance, obtaining supplies in Marion, was dispatched to Peabody Health and Rehab, where resident choked and lost consciousness. However, nursing home staff members were able to dislodge what was obstructing breathing and canceled the call before the ambulance arrived.

2:26 p.m. — A 73-year-old woman short of breath in the 200 block of N. Elm St. in Peabody declined to be taken to a hospital by Hillsboro ambulance.

6:02 p.m. — A 54-year-old man with cardiac issues was transferred by Hillsboro ambulance from HCH to Kansas Heart Hospital, Wichita. The ambulance returned to Hillsboro at 8:25 p.m.

6:43 p.m. — A 77-year-old man who may have suffered a stroke in the 600 block of N. Olive St. in Peabody was taken to Wesley by Marion ambulance. Tampa ambulance stood by until 8:14 p.m. at the Hillsboro ambulance station in case of additional calls.
