Broadcasts about these fire and ambulance calls were monitored this past week by the newspaper:

APRIL 16

6:28 a.m. — A 77-year-old man, limp and responding abnormally in the 600 block of N. Olive St. in Peabody, was taken to NMC Health, formerly Newton Medical Center, by Hillsboro ambulance. The ambulance returned to Hillsboro at 8:21 a.m.

4:46 p.m. — At the request of a sheriff’s deputy, Marion ambulance attendants checked a man with severe bleeding from an arm injury in the 200 block of W. 8th St. in Florence. He declined to be taken to a hospital.

5:41 p.m. — An 83-year-old man with trouble breathing at a farm on 150th Rd. west of Kanza Rd. was taken by Hillsboro ambulance to Hillsboro Community Hospital.

10:15 p.m. — Hillsboro ambulance returned to HCH to transfer its previous patient, now diagnosed with pneumothorax, to NMC Health. The ambulance returned to Hillsboro at 11:40 p.m.

APRIL 17

5:21 p.m. — At a physician’s request, a 50-year-old woman with blood pressure issues in the 200 block of W. 6th St. in Florence was taken by Marion ambulance to St. Luke Hospital, Marion.

6:08 p.m. — At the request of law enforcement officers because vehicle air bags had deployed, three uninjured people involved in a two-vehicle accident at Roosevelt and Kellison Sts. in Marion were checked by Marion ambulance attendants. All declined to be taken to a hospital. Hillsboro and Tampa ambulances initially were dispatched but told to stand down.

7:22 p.m. — A child with multiple medical problems in the 100 block of S. Floral Dr. in Hillsboro was checked by Hillsboro ambulance attendants, but they did not take him to a hospital.

11:45 p.m. — A 75-year-old man with a brain bleed was transferred by Marion ambulance from St. Luke to Ascension Via Christi St. Francis Hospital, Wichita. The ambulance returned to Marion at 2:06 a.m.

THURSDAY

12:45 p.m. — An 88-year-old woman was transferred by Hillsboro ambulance from HCH to Kansas Heart Hospital, Wichita.

4:58 p.m. — A 32-year-old woman having a seizure at Central National Bank in Marion was taken to HCH by Marion ambulance.

5:41 p.m. — A man unable to stand after crashing a motorbike on railroad tracks on Remington Rd. south of 180th Rd. was taken by Marion ambulance to Wesley Medical Center, Wichita. Marion firefighters and rescue squad members were first on the scene.

FRIDAY

8:30 a.m. — Marion ambulance was called off before arriving at a home near US-50 and 90th Rd. where a medical alarm accidentally was activated by an 84-year-old man.

1:52 p.m. — A 78-year-old man, bleeding from a broken ankle in the 600 block of S. Main St. in Hillsboro, was taken to St. Francis by Hillsboro ambulance. Hillsboro firefighters helped lift him. The ambulance returned to Hillsboro at 4:45 p.m.

2:08 p.m. — A request to transfer a 69-year-old woman with chest pains from St. Luke was put on hold until Hillsboro ambulance returned. St. Luke arranged alternative transportation instead.

7:56 p.m. — At the request of Peabody police, an intoxicated teen, vomiting at the Hub youth center in Peabody, was evaluated for an hour but not taken to a hospital by Peabody and Hillsboro ambulance attendants.

SATURDAY

12:37 a.m. — An 82-year-old man who fell at a home in the 500 block of N. Roosevelt St. in Marion declined to be taken to a hospital by Marion ambulance.

8:02 a.m. — An 80-year-old woman not appearing alert in the 200 block of S. Lincoln St. in Marion was taken to St. Luke by Marion ambulance.

9:09 a.m. — A 36-year-old man bleeding from his leg at a home in the 200 block of S. Lincoln St. in Hillsboro declined to be taken to a hospital by Hillsboro ambulance, but the ambulance followed him to HCH when family members took him there.

9:53 a.m. — A 35-year-old man with chest pains was transferred by Marion ambulance from St. Luke to Wesley. The ambulance returned to Marion at 1:20 p.m.

11:21 a.m. — A patient with chest pain in the 600 block of W. 3rd St. in Peabody declined to be taken to a hospital by Hillsboro ambulance.

3:36 p.m. — Hillsboro firefighters shut off natural gas to a meter struck by a vehicle at Parkview Mennonite Brethren Church in Hillsboro. Atmos Energy was notified.

4:19 p.m. — An 82-year-old man who fell at a home in the 500 block of N. Roosevelt St. in Marion was taken to St. Luke by Marion ambulance.

9:29 p.m. — A woman who fell at a home on Random Rd. at Marion County Park and Lake was helped up by Marion ambulance attendants but declined to be taken to a hospital.

SUNDAY

10:27 a.m. — An 80-year-old man who fell at a home on Hett Hollow in Marion was taken to St. Luke by Marion ambulance.

1:33 p.m. — A 71-year-old man with respiratory distress was transferred by Hillsboro ambulance from St. Luke to Ascension Via Christi St. Teresa Hospital, Wichita. The ambulance returned to Hillsboro at 5:33 p.m.

MONDAY

9:03 a.m. — A 70-year-old woman with chest pains at a home on Lakeshore Dr. near Jerome St. at Marion County Park and Lake was taken to St. Luke by Marion ambulance.

11:32 a.m. — Marion ambulance returned to transfer the same patient from St. Luke to Kansas Heart Hospital. The ambulance returned to Marion at 2:10 p.m.

12:43 p.m. — An 80-year-old man who fell at a home on Hett Hollow in Marion was taken to NMC Health by Hillsboro ambulance. The county ambulance director provided initial evaluation.

1:18 p.m. — Tampa ambulance was ordered to stand by in Hillsboro until 2:10 p.m. in case of additional calls.

2 p.m. — A grass fire moving toward structures near 160th and Falcon Rds. was brought under control within an hour by Hillsboro and Lehigh firefighters.

2:30 p.m. — While still battling the fire at 160th and Falcon Rds., Hillsboro firefighters were sent along with Goessel and Peabody firefighters to a shed and grass fire near 180th and Alamo Rds.

The fire spread west toward the county line and north toward US-56. Upon arrival, firefighters quickly called for additional help from Canton, Durham, Florence, Herington, Lincolnville, and Ramona firefighters. En route back from Newton, Hillsboro ambulance also was dispatched.

Firefighters continued to battle the blaze for 3½ hours.

3:33 p.m. — Portions of the firefighting crew from 180th and Alamo Rds. were diverted to another, smaller fire at 170th and Chisholm Trail Rds. It was extinguished within 30 minutes.

6:53 p.m. — A fire alarm at a home near 150th and Timber Rds. was determined to be a false alarm before Florence firefighters arrived.

7:08 p.m. — A 5-year-old girl with a broken arm was transferred by Hillsboro ambulance from HCH to Wesley. The ambulance returned to Hillsboro at 9:25 p.m.
