Broadcasts about these fire and ambulance calls were monitored this past week by the newspaper:

MARCH 26

4:30 a.m. — An unconscious 66-year-old woman found on the floor of Westview Manor in Peabody was taken on an emergency basis to Wesley Medical Center, Wichita, by Hillsboro ambulance. Peabody police were called after the patient became combative. The ambulance was diverted to Wesley from NMC Health, formerly Newton Medical Center. Peabody ambulance was paged but did not answer. Initial dispatches did not include the location of the call; ambulance attendants had to ask. The ambulance returned to Hillsboro at 7:47 a.m.

4:46 a.m. — Peabody firefighters returned Sunday’s house fire on 100th Rd. east of Pawnee Rd. and spent 30 minutes extinguishing rekindled debris.

11:09 a.m. — Marion firefighters found no evidence of leakage after a gas line was struck during sewer line repairs in an alley between the 300 blocks of N. Cedar and N. Lincoln Sts. Firefighters remained at the construction site until a crew from Atmos Energy arrived.

4:01 p.m. — A 47-year-old woman with back pain at a Main Street Ministries apartment in Hillsboro was taken by Hillsboro ambulance to Hillsboro Community Hospital.

MARCH 27

1:08 a.m. — A confused 86-year-old man who fell at a home on Robin Rd. in Pilsen was taken to St. Luke Hospital, Marion, by Marion ambulance.

3:22 a.m. — An 87-year-old woman who recently had surgery and fell out of bed at a home in the 500 block of Coble St. in Marion declined to be taken to a hospital by Marion ambulance. Once again, initial dispatches did not include the location of the call; ambulance attendants had to ask.

10:39 a.m. — A stable 86-year-old male patient was transferred by Marion ambulance from St. Luke to NMC Health. The ambulance returned to Marion at 12:58 p.m.

10:47 a.m. — A 25-year-old man shaking while he walked or stood at Hilltop Manor in Marion was evaluated by the county ambulance director and decided to go to a hospital by private vehicle rather than wait for Hillsboro ambulance to arrive.

12:07 p.m. — A 79-year-old man who fell in the 600 block of N. Elm St. in Peabody declined to be taken to a hospital by Hillsboro ambulance.

12:49 p.m. — Dispatchers contacted Hillsboro ambulance by telephone with a private assignment not broadcast over normal frequencies. The ambulance soon reported that a medical alarm accidentally had been activated at the undisclosed location.

6:19 p.m. — Durham firefighters spent a little more than an hour overseeing controlled burning of a field at 340th and Chisholm Trail Rds.

8:39 p.m. — A woman who fell at Indian Guide Terrace Apartments in Peabody and activated a pendant alarm declined to be taken to a hospital by Hillsboro or Peabody ambulance, both of which were dispatched. A Peabody firefighter also was called to help lift the patient but ended up not being needed.

10:24 p.m. — A 17-year-old boy with cardiac monitoring was transferred by Marion ambulance from St. Luke to Wesley. The ambulance returned to Marion at 1:30 a.m.

THURSDAY

1:30 a.m. — Immediately upon returning, Marion ambulance transferred a second patient from St. Luke to Wesley. The ambulance returned to Marion at 4:07 a.m.

12:45 p.m. — A 63-year-old woman who fell near Hoppy Line in the 100 block of N. 1st St. in Marion was taken to St. Luke by Marion ambulance. Marion firefighters helped lift the patient.

3:29 p.m. — A 98-year-old woman who fell and injured a hand at a home in the 100 block of Elm St. in Marion declined to be taken to a hospital by Marion ambulance. Marion police were first on the scene.

5:33 p.m. — A fire alarm at Nebraska Hall on the Tabor College campus in Hillsboro was determined by Hillsboro firefighters to have been a false alarm, possibly set off by a shower.

9:05 p.m. — Marion ambulance was dispatched to Hilltop Manor in Marion where a 28-year-old man reported that his hands were tingling and changing colors after taking attention-deficit medication and “a lot of meth.” “Fabulous!” was a medic’s reply. “Do you know if law enforcement is going to join us on this call?” A dispatcher replied that Marion police already were there. The man declined to be taken to a hospital. No arrests were made.

FRIDAY

3:22 p.m. — A man in his 60s fell out of the back of a truck and hurt his head at the county shops on N. Coble St. in Marion was taken to St. Luke by Marion ambulance after a Marion firefighter reported the accident.

3:36 p.m. — A small grass fire near 180th Rd. and US-77 was extinguished within 30 minutes by Marion firefighters.

SATURDAY

12:12 a.m. — A fire alarm at Tabor College townhouses was determined by Hillsboro firefighters to have been a false alarm.

7:29 a.m. — A fire outside Goessel Elementary School was extinguished within 30 minutes by Goessel firefighters.

3:14 p.m. — A fire alarm at Marion’s Sports and Aquatics Center was determined by Marion firefighters to have been a false alarm caused by a faulty sensor.

3:15 p.m. — Hillsboro ambulance responded to a call, the location of which was obscured by firefighter transmissions. The patient declined to be taken to a hospital.

5:17 p.m. — Odor reportedly coming from tanks or pipes at Marion’s Cooperative Grain and Supply could not be detected by Marion firefighters.

7:16 p.m. — The day’s second fire alarm at Tabor College townhouses was determined by Hillsboro firefighters to have been another false alarm.

SUNDAY

10:12 p.m. — A confused 30-year-old man who fell off a four-wheeler in the 200 block of W. 5th St. in Tampa and hurt his head declined to be taken to a hospital by Tampa ambulance.

10:15 p.m. — A 56-year-old woman on oxygen, dry heaving after feeling ill for several days in the 100 block of S. State St. in Goessel, declined to be taken to a hospital by Hillsboro ambulance. Goessel first responders were paged but did not answer.

MONDAY

7 a.m. — A carbon monoxide alarm at a home in the 400 block of N. Roosevelt St. in Marion was determined by Marion firefighters to have been caused by a defective heater. Marion ambulance was called to check the resident for ill effects. She declined to be taken to a hospital.

9:42 a.m. — A natural gas leak in an alley between the 200 blocks of N. Freeborn and N. Roosevelt Sts. in Marion was monitored by Marion firefighters until an Atmos Energy crew arrived.

2:27 p.m. — Fire in a tree struck by lightning just west of the county line near 130th and Meridian Rds. was extinguished in less than an hour by Goessel firefighters.

8:20 p.m. — Before Marion firefighters arrived, an alarm company canceled a false alarm from smoke detector at a home on Narrow Rd. in Canada.
