Broadcasts about these fire and ambulance calls were monitored this past week by the newspaper:

JUNE 27

1:01 a.m. — A 58-year-old woman complaining of rib pain and trouble walking in the 200 block of S. Olive St. in Peabody was taken as a psychological patient to Hillsboro Community Hospital by Hillsboro ambulance. The woman’s address initially was misreported as being on N. Olive St. A Peabody police officer and a first responder aboard Peabody ambulance evaluated the patient before Hillsboro ambulance arrived. The ambulance was back in its station at 2:27 a.m.

10:16 a.m. — Marion firefighters were sent to the 400 block of Elm St. in Marion after a tree limb fell on power lines during a windstorm.

Power irregularities impacting both newspaper scanners prevented monitoring of transmissions between 2:48 p.m. and 7:19 p.m.

7:20 p.m. — A 76-year-old man, still lying on the ground after falling at Salem Home in Hillsboro, was taken to HCH by Hillsboro ambulance. Ambulance attendants had to ask dispatchers to call the nursing home to open a door. No one answered, but someone eventually did show up to open the door for them.

JUNE 28

12:59 a.m. — A 50-year-old woman with stroke-like symptoms at a residence in the 400 block of Grandview St. in Florence was taken by Marion ambulance to St. Luke Hospital, Marion. Florence first responders were paged but did not answer.

5:50 a.m. — Marion ambulance and Florence firefighters briefly were dispatched to a traffic accident on US-50 west of Alfalfa Rd. The driver, who had hit a deer, declined to be taken to a hospital. Florence first responders also were paged but did not answer.

6:02 a.m. — Hillsboro ambulance briefly was dispatched to a motorcycle accident near Goldenrod and 190th Rds., but the rider, who had told dispatchers he thought his collar bone was dislocated, declined to be taken to a hospital.

7:52 a.m. — Marion and Florence firefighters and Marion ambulance were dispatched to investigate a smoky odor in a farmhouse near 190th and Wagon Wheel Rd., but all units were able to return to their stations within 30 minutes.

9:28 a.m. — A 73-year-old man with diabetic issues at a residence near US-56 and Nighthawk Rd. declined to be taken to a hospital by Hillsboro ambulance. The county ambulance director also responded to the call.

9:42 a.m. — A 67-year-old man was transferred by Marion ambulance from St. Luke to NMC Health, formerly Newton Medical Center.

THURSDAY

5:56 a.m. — A woman who, despite a lack of appropriate symptoms, was worried that she might be having a stroke at a residence in the 400 block of S. Cedar St. in Marion declined to be taken to a hospital by Marion ambulance.

1:49 p.m. — A 21-year-old woman complaining of pelvic pain after hitting a curb while riding a bicycle near Jost Service, 111 W. B St., Hillsboro, declined to be taken to a hospital by Hillsboro ambulance.

7:35 p.m. — A 63-year-old woman throwing up without relief from cancer medications was taken by Peabody ambulance to HCH from Indian Guide Terrace apartments in Peabody.

9:42 p.m. — An 82-year-old woman was transferred by Hillsboro ambulance from HCH to Ascension Via Christi St. Francis Hospital, Wichita. The ambulance returned to its quarters at 12:29 a.m.

FRIDAY

9:11 a.m. — A 70-year-old woman, still on the ground after falling and hitting her head, arm, and hip outside a farmhouse near US-50 and Kanza Rd., was taken by Hillsboro ambulance to NMC. A sole first responder aboard Peabody ambulance evaluated the patient until Hillsboro ambulance arrived.

10:45 a.m. — Peabody ambulance was dispatched to Indian Guide Terrace for a medical alarm. Recordings from two newspaper scanners do not indicate what happened after the call.

2:42 p.m. — An 83-year-old woman who fell in her driveway in the 100 block of S. Floral Dr. in Hillsboro thought she was uninjured but asked to be checked by Hillsboro ambulance attendants and ended up being taken to HCH.

2:57 p.m. — Marion ambulance was summoned to the county jail, apparently to perform a test on a person in custody.

3:18 p.m. — Marion, Florence, and Hillsboro firefighters and Marion ambulance were sent to Bown-Corby Apartments for a report of smoke that turned out to be a pizza box that apparently caught fire in an oven.

10:21 p.m. — A 72-year-old man gasping for breath at a farmhouse near US-56 and Nighthawk Rd. was taken to St. Luke by Hillsboro ambulance. Marion ambulance also was dispatched.

SATURDAY

1:04 a.m. — A 51-year-old woman with hip pain in the 100 block of County Rd. in Tampa was taken to St. Luke by Tampa ambulance.

9:27 a.m. — A 62-year-old man with a heparin drip was transferred by Hillsboro ambulance from HCH to Kansas Heart Hospital, Wichita. The ambulance returned to Hillsboro at 12:19 p.m.

4:29 p.m. — A 67-year-old woman, sweating, nauseated, having trouble breathing, and experiencing numbness in her arms, was rushed by Marion ambulance to Wesley Medical Center, Wichita, from where she stopped her car in front of Marion post office. Ambulance attendants asked twice about possibly rendezvousing with a helicopter, but none was available quickly enough. They also paged Peabody ambulance to meet them in Peabody and provide a driver and accepted help from an off-duty Harvey County medical technician, also in Peabody, so additional staffing could be available to treat the patient en route.

SUNDAY

1:29 a.m. — A 63-year-old man with chest pains, decreased consciousness, and a history of heart problems declined to be taken to a hospital from a farmhouse near 210th and Jade Rds. Marion and Hillsboro ambulances both responded.

MONDAY

3:34 a.m. — Marion ambulance was dispatched after a caller reported that a person was unconscious in a vehicle in the 300 block of N. 3rd St. in Marion. Before the ambulance arrived, sheriff’s deputies determined that the woman merely was sleeping after a traveling companion had been arrested on suspicion of drug possession in a traffic stop a few hours earlier. Deputies invited her to the sheriff’s office for a conversation. Her companion was released without bond a few hours later.

12:05 p.m. — A 70-year-old woman with kidney failure was transferred by Hillsboro ambulance from Salem Home to HCH.

2:13 p.m. — A 28-year-old woman with cancer complications was transferred by Hillsboro ambulance from HCH to St. Francis. The ambulance returned to Hillsboro at 4:49 p.m.

4:41 p.m. — A St. Luke patient was transferred by Marion ambulance to Kansas Heart. The ambulance returned to Marion at 7:38 p.m.

9:45 p.m. — A 38-year-old woman with a dislocated elbow was transferred by Marion ambulance from St. Luke to NMC. The ambulance returned to Marion at 11:44 p.m.

9:53 p.m. — Peabody ambulance and Burns first responders were sent to a farmhouse near 20th and Wagon Wheel Rds. after a medical alarm belonging to a 99-year-old woman was activated and she could not be reached by telephone. A first responder made contact with her and called off the other units.

10:18 p.m. — A 50-year-old woman with a disconnected colostomy bag at the Peabody American Legion post declined to be taken to a hospital by Peabody ambulance.
