Broadcasts about these fire and ambulance calls were monitored this past week by the newspaper:

MAY 30

8:20 a.m. — A downed power pole near Ramona’s post office was monitored by Ramona firefighters for an hour until an Evergy crew arrived.

11:28 a.m. — A 76-year-old man, too weak to get into a vehicle at a farmhouse near 110th and Sunflower Rds., was taken by Marion ambulance to St. Luke Hospital, Marion. The county ambulance director arrived before the ambulance.

10:57 p.m. — A barely conscious woman, bleeding after a recent miscarriage, declined to be taken to a hospital from the 900 block of N. Olive St. in Peabody. Hillsboro and Peabody ambulances responded to the call.

11:19 p.m. — Marion ambulance was dispatched to Homestead Senior Residences, Marion, after an automated report of a fall, but the patient declined to be taken to a hospital.

MAY 31

No ambulance or fire calls were monitored.

THURSDAY

9:22 a.m. — A patient from a residence in the 400 block of S. Vernon Ave. in Lehigh was transferred by Hillsboro ambulance to Parkside Homes, Hillsboro.

9:52 a.m. — With Hillsboro ambulance transferring a patient to a nursing home, Marion ambulance was dispatched along with Hillsboro first responders and firefighters to an automated report of a traffic accident at 220th and Falcon Rds. However, the call was canceled as a false alarm two minutes later.

3:49 p.m. — An 80-year-old woman with cardiac problems was transferred by Marion ambulance on a non-emergency basis from St. Luke to Wesley Medical Center, Wichita. The ambulance returned to Marion at 6:54 p.m.

9:06 p.m. — A diabetic 40-year-old woman with low blood sugar in the 500 block of E. 1st St. in Ramona declined to be taken to a hospital by Tampa ambulance.

FRIDAY

12:23 a.m. — An unconscious man, not breathing at a residence in the 500 block of Topeka St. in Lincolnville, was pronounced dead by a coroner after cardiopulmonary resuscitation failed. Disability prevented a caller from following CPR instructions relayed by dispatchers. However, two Lincolnville first responders arrived within eight minutes and began CPR. Marion ambulance and the ambulance director arrived less than six minutes after that. Additional Lincolnville firefighters were paged repeatedly, but no responses were monitored.

12:10 p.m. — A 90-year-old man who fell outside a farmhouse two miles north of US-50 on Bluestem Rd. declined to be taken to a hospital by Marion ambulance, which arrived 24 minutes after being dispatched.

1:32 p.m. — An unresponsive 2-year-old boy at a rental home in the 1000 block of Sherman St. in Marion was pronounced dead by a coroner Marion ambulance attendants. CPR instructions were relayed by dispatchers before the ambulance arrived. Hillsboro ambulance initially was dispatched as well but was called off. A Marion police officer and Marion’s police chief were summoned.

3:02 p.m. — A 19-year-old woman, possibly seriously injured in a traffic accident on US-50 near Alfalfa Rd., was taken to Wesley by Marion ambulance. Peabody ambulance and Florence firefighters and rescue squad members also were dispatched. The county ambulance director responded, as well. Florence first responders were paged but did not answer. Marion ambulance returned to Marion at 6:05 p.m. and was stationed at Marion’s Central Park to stand by during Chingawassa Days.

4:14 p.m. — A 76-year-old man, weak and dizzy after an earlier colonoscopy, was taken by Hillsboro ambulance to St. Luke from a farmhouse north of Peabody on Newell Rd.

7:09 p.m. — A 16-year-old girl having a seizure while riding in a 16-passenger van on US-77 between 40th and 50th Rds. declined to be taken to a hospital by Marion ambulance, which arrived 19 minutes after the initial call. Burns first responders checked the girl before the ambulance arrived. The ambulance returned to Chingawassa Days at 7:57 p.m. and remained there until 10:15 p.m.

SATURDAY

11:11 a.m. — A woman who may have suffered a seizure while riding in a pickup, originally reported to be west of Marion on US-56 and then reported to be north of Marion on US-56/77 near 220th Rd., was taken on an emergency basis to Ascension Via Christi St. Francis Hospital, Wichita, by Marion ambulance. The ambulance returned to Marion at 2:13 p.m.

7:43 p.m. — Marion ambulance again stood by until 10:45 p.m. at Central Park in Marion during Chingawassa Days.

9 p.m. — A 10-year-old girl who suffered a two-inch cut on her knee when she fell off a merry-go-round at Chingawassa Days was taken to St. Luke.

SUNDAY

12:37 a.m. — A person who was injured when a vehicle became fully engulfed in flames in a field behind a barbed wire fence west of 190th and Pawnee Rds. was taken by Marion ambulance on an emergency basis to Wesley. Sheriff’s deputies asked that state troopers and Sedgwick County deputies secure a blood sample from the patient at Wesley. Two other people reportedly trapped in the accident were not in the vehicle. Hillsboro ambulance and the ambulance director also responded, but no one else appeared to have been taken to a hospital. Marion firefighters spent more than two hours extinguishing the fire. Deputies also were concerned about cattle that apparently escaped. Hillsboro firefighters at one point were asked to bring a tanker truck, but the request later was canceled. Marion ambulance returned to Marion at 3:20 a.m.

2:59 p.m. — A woman found sitting aimlessly outside Peabody Market was discovered by a sheriff’s deputy to have a possible head wound or other medical condition. Hillsboro ambulance took her on a non-emergency basis to Hillsboro Community Hospital.

11:17 p.m. — An EagleMed medical ambulance transferred a patient from HCH to the University of Kansas Hospital in Kansas City, Kansas.

MONDAY

4:03 a.m. — A 76-year-old man with abdominal pain at a residence on Lakeshore Rd. near Lois Ln. at Marion County Lake was taken by Marion ambulance to NMC Health, formerly Newton Medical Center. The ambulance returned to Marion at 6:03 a.m.

7:04 a.m. — One of two people involved in a collision between a pickup and a semi-trailer truck on US-77 south of 170th Rd. was taken by Marion ambulance to NMC. The other declined to be taken to a hospital. The county ambulance director and Marion firefighters also responded to the accident. The ambulance returned to Marion at 9:45 a.m.

8:48 a.m. — On a physician’s orders, a 96-year-old woman at Bethesda Home in Goessel was taken to NMC by Hillsboro ambulance. The ambulance returned to Hillsboro at 10:49 a.m.

9:46 a.m. — An 88-year-old woman unable to walk after falling a month ago was taken by Marion ambulance to St. Luke from a farmhouse north of 220th and Clover Rds. Dispatchers initially mis-directed the call to Peabody ambulance, which the county ambulance director, who also responded, noted was out of service all week.

2:38 p.m. — An 87-year-old woman having trouble breathing at Bethesda Home was taken by Hillsboro ambulance to Mercy Hospital, Moundridge. The ambulance returned to Hillsboro at 5:23 p.m.

7 p.m. — A possibly septic 78-year-old woman at a Parkside Homes apartment in Hillsboro was taken to HCH by Hillsboro ambulance. The ambulance returned to its station at 7:43 p.m.

7:24 p.m. — With Hillsboro ambulance still transferring its patient from Parkside, Marion ambulance was dispatched to the 400 block of W. B St. in Hillsboro for a 65-year-old man who was having trouble breathing and suspected he was having a heart attack. At the request of a Hillsboro ambulance medic who monitored the call, Hillsboro first responders also were dispatched as was a Hillsboro police officer after dispatchers reported that the patient had become uncooperative. First responders and police arrived five minutes after the initial call. Marion ambulance arrived seven minutes later and took the patient to HCH.
