Broadcasts about these fire and ambulance calls were monitored this past week by the newspaper:

MARCH 28

7:12 a.m. — A 29-year-old Union Pacific employee with an injured toe and chest pain from airbag deployment after he rolled his pickup onto its side on icy roads near 250th and Zebulon Rds. was taken by Marion ambulance to St. Luke Hospital, Marion. Lincolnville firefighters and first responders also were dispatched.

9:50 a.m. — A 63-year-old man with chest pains in the 1500 block of Victory Ln. in Marion was taken by Marion ambulance to Hillsboro Community Hospital after being diverted there by St. Luke.

12:01 p.m. — Marion ambulance was sent to St. Luke for 20 minutes to help with cardiopulmonary resuscitation.

1:46 p.m. — A 59-year-old woman who fell and hit her head as a residence in the 200 block of S. Elm St. in Hillsboro was taken to HCH by Hillsboro ambulance.

3:43 p.m. — A 63-year-old man with chest pain, possibly the same patient from 9:50 a.m., was transferred from HCH to Wesley Medical Center, Wichita. The ambulance returned to Hillsboro at 6:15 p.m.

4:36 p.m. — A controlled grass fire that grew out of control in the 600 block of E. Main St. in Goessel was extinguished in less than 25 minutes by Goessel firefighters.

6:01 p.m. — Peabody firefighters were dispatched to a controlled burn at 50th and Quail Creek Rds. but almost immediately were told the landowner had brought the fire back under control.

8:36 p.m. — Goessel firefighters were called back to the 600 block of E. Main St. for an apparently rekindled fire, which the landowner denied starting. The fire in a hay field was extinguished within 30 minutes.

MARCH 29

8:07 p.m. — A 60-year-old man who fell on rocks along the east end of Marion Reservoir’s dam and hit his head was taken to St. Luke by Marion ambulance. Marion firefighters also responded because of initial reports that the man could not free himself from rocks along the dam. However, they were not needed.

11:12 p.m. — A epileptic 30-year-old woman having a seizure and vomiting in the 300 block of Locust St. in Marion declined to be taken to a hospital by Marion ambulance. Hillsboro ambulance initially responded as well but was called off.

THURSDAY

12:09 p.m. — Without being dispatched, Goessel firefighters reported to their city’s burn site and spent an hour extinguishing a large fire that threatened to spread because of strong winds.

1:24 p.m. — Without being dispatched, Marion firefighters extinguished hot spots at the Marion tree dump and then returned half an hour later after receiving reports of flames along a river bank. They requested that Marion police check the dump through the night but were told the city would be without police after 5 p.m.

1:29 p.m. — Checking a passer-by’s report, Marion firefighters found hay bales and a pasture on fire near 180th and Pawnee Rds. They monitored the fire for more than two hours while waiting for the landowner to return.

2:36 p.m. — Ramona, Lost Springs, and Lincolnville firefighters spent 1½ hours extinguishing a fire, suspected of being a rekindled controlled burn, along railroad tracks north of 340th and Upland Rds. Railroad traffic was suspended for an hour during the firefighting.

6:06 p.m. — A 57-year-old man having trouble walking after a fall a week earlier was taken by Hillsboro ambulance to HCH from an undisclosed Hillsboro apartment building.

6:17 p.m. — Hillsboro firefighters discovered re-ignited fires in small brush piles along Falcon Rd. north of 170th Rd. and spent an hour extinguishing them.

10 p.m. — A 4-year-old girl experiencing a possibly violent, manic episode in the 600 block of N. Maple St. in Peabody was taken to NMC Health, formerly Newton Medical Center, by Hillsboro ambulance. One of two Peabody EMTs who also were dispatched accompanied the ambulance. Medics waited for law enforcement to arrive before entering the home. The ambulance returned to Hillsboro at 12:02 a.m.

FRIDAY

8:34 a.m. — An 88-year-old woman found on the floor of a residence in the 200 block of Grandview St. in Florence was pronounced dead by Marion ambulance attendants. A sheriff’s deputy was summoned.

12:43 p.m. — Marion firefighters spent an hour extinguishing a re-ignited grass fire and smoldering tree line on 180th Rd. west of Quail Creek Rd. Hillsboro and Peabody firefighters initially were dispatched as well but were called off within eight minutes.

12:54 p.m. — While heading toward the grass fire on 180th Rd., Hillsboro firefighters noticed smoke from the Hillsboro tree dump and spent half an hour extinguishing fires there.

1 p.m. — Burns firefighters spent more than four hours in Butler County helping battle a large grass fire west of El Dorado.

1:59 p.m. — Lincolnville firefighters noticed what appeared to be a large grass or structure fire near 300th and Upland Rds. Marion firefighters, en route back to their station from 180th Rd., volunteered to join them and Lost Springs firefighters in battling the fire. However, when firefighters reached the source of the smoke, they found only a rekindled pile of burning tires, safe to continue burning for 10 to 12 hours. All responding departments were told to disregard the call.

2:41 p.m. — A brush and ditch fire at 210th and Limestone Rds. was extinguished within 1½ hours by Hillsboro firefighters. Marion and Durham firefighters also were dispatched but were called off within 10 minutes.

3 p.m. — A man of undisclosed age and complaining of chest pain at the county jail was taken to St. Luke by Marion ambulance.

3:58 p.m. — A 67-year-old man with a fractured hip was transferred by Hillsboro ambulance from HCH to Wesley. The ambulance returned to Hillsboro at 6:46 p.m.

3:59 p.m. — A rekindled fire in a debris pile on 70th Rd. east of K-15 was extinguished and the pile dismantled and buried by Goessel firefighters, who spent more than two hours doing so.

5:37 p.m. — Lincolnville firefighters checked out what seemed to be smoke east of Lincolnville but determined it was soot blowing off a field previously burned.

6:27 p.m. — A 76-year-old woman needing a catheter was transferred on an emergency basis from St. Luke to NMC by Marion ambulance. The ambulance returned to Marion at 9:06 p.m.

SATURDAY

6:48 a.m. — A 98-year-old woman with chest pain was transferred by Hillsboro ambulance on an emergency basis from Salem Home to HCH.

7:16 a.m. — A patch of grass burning in a ditch at 270th and Bluestem Rds. was extinguished within 1½ hours by Lincolnville firefighters, some of whom remained afterward to monitor a back burn they set.

11:03 a.m. — A 98-year-old woman, possibly the earlier patient from Salem, was transferred by Hillsboro ambulance from HCH to Kansas Heart Hospital, Wichita.

4:19 p.m. — Marion firefighters were dispatched to a tree on fire along the Cottonwood River near Pawnee and 190th Rds. but were told by the landowner that it was a controlled burn, still under control.

7:30 p.m. — An incoherent 40-year-old woman, unable to get out of bed without falling, was taken by Hillsboro ambulance to HCH from the 600 block of N. Maple St. in Peabody. Peabody police were called after Peabody ambulance, which also was dispatched, reported that the patient had become combative.

8:14 p.m. — A caller reported that a suicidal man at a rented residence in the 300 block of S. Roosevelt St. in Marion had taken an entire bottle of ibuprofen and barricaded himself in a bathroom. Marion police and ambulance were called. The ambulance staged back while an officer interviewed the man, who was found not to be suicidal and not to have taken any medication and who told the officer he merely wanted to leave the residence.

11:47 p.m. — An 85-year-old man, target of a silver alert since his disappearance Friday, was located by a private citizen after a six-hour search following discovery of his pickup along US-50. Although reportedly uninjured, he was taken by Marion ambulance to St. Luke from where he was found near 90th and Wagon Wheel Rds.

SUNDAY

12:06 a.m. — A rekindled controlled burn in a tree line along Remington Rd. south of 170th Rd. was extinguished within an hour by Marion firefighters.

9:04 a.m. — An 88-year-old man, dizzy and unable to get off the floor of a residence in the 100 block of Wilson St. in Hillsboro, was taken to HCH by Hillsboro ambulance.

9:55 a.m. — An 85-year-old man suffering an unspecified trauma was transferred by Marion ambulance from St. Luke to Ascension Via Christi St. Francis Hospital, Wichita.

10:19 a.m. — A rekindled controlled burn near 190th at Pawnee Rds. was battled for 1½ hours by Marion and Hillsboro firefighters.

11:43 a.m. — Just as Marion firefighters were leaving the fire at 190th and Pawnee Rds., they were sent to another grass fire along US-56/77 near 220th Rd. Hillsboro firefighters volunteered to accompany them but were not needed. The fire was extinguished within 20 minutes.

12:25 p.m. — Tampa firefighters discovered and spent 20 minutes extinguishing a rekindled flames in a pair of hay bales south of Tampa on Limestone Rd.

4:14 p.m. — A neurological patient was transferred by Hillsboro ambulance from HCH to Wesley. The ambulance returned to Hillsboro at 6:51 p.m.

5:15 p.m. — A lawnmower and grass on fire in the 300 block of N. Adams St. in Hillsboro were extinguished within six minutes by Hillsboro firefighters.

5:56 p.m. — An 88-year-old man needing catheter replacement was taken by Marion ambulance to St. Luke from Marion Assisted Living.

7:23 p.m. — A tree smoldering after an apparently unreported controlled burn near 160th and Sunflower Rds. was extinguished within 30 minutes by Marion firefighters.

MONDAY

6:58 a.m. — An 89-year-old woman who fell and injured her surgically repaired hip at Bethesda Home in Goessel was transferred to NMC by Hillsboro ambulance. Goessel first responders were paged but did not answer. The ambulance returned to Hillsboro at 8:34 a.m.

10:07 a.m. — A 75-year-old woman who fell at a residence in the 200 block of S. Freeborn St. in Marion was taken to NMC by Marion ambulance. The ambulance returned to Marion at 12:39 p.m.

12:55 p.m. — An 80-year-old woman who fell and hurt her back and hip at Salem Home in Hillsboro was taken to HCH by Hillsboro ambulance.

4:25 p.m. — Marion firefighters responding to a report of smoke near 160th and Sunflower Rds. found a tree smoldering from a previous controlled burn and smoke rising from Marion’s tree dump. Both were doused, and all trucks were back in their station by 5:48 p.m.

10:07 p.m. — A smoldering tree in a tree line south of 160th and Quail Creek Rds. was extinguished within 30 minute by Marion firefighters.
