Broadcasts about these fire and ambulance calls were monitored this past week by the newspaper:

SEPT. 27

7:43 a.m. — A smoldering utility pole in the 500 block of N. Cedar St. in Marion was extinguished within 10 minutes by Marion firefighters.

8:40 a.m. — A 65-year-old woman confined to bed for two days after falling and possibly breaking a leg was taken from the 700 block of Abilene St. in Durham to Hillsboro Community Hospital by Hillsboro ambulance. A first responder from Durham and Tampa ambulance also were dispatched.

SEPT. 28

4:43 p.m. — A 72-year-old man with neurological issues was transferred by Hillsboro ambulance from HCH to NMC Health, Newton. The ambulance returned to Hillsboro at 6:19 p.m.

5:36 p.m. — A 14-year-old boy who may have broken a leg while playing football behind Hillsboro Elementary School was taken to Wesley Medical Center, Wichita, by Marion ambulance. A first responder from Hillsboro was on the scene within six minutes. The ambulance arrived 15 minutes after the initial call and returned to Marion at 9:50 p.m.

7:41 p.m. — A fire alarm at the Tabor College men’s quad was determined by Hillsboro firefighters to have been caused by accidental activation of a call box.

THURSDAY

1:32 a.m. — A 65-year-old man in pain and unable to sleep at Oakwood Manor Apartments in Hillsboro was taken to HCH by Hillsboro ambulance.

8:58 a.m. — A cardiac patient was transferred by Marion ambulance from St. Luke Hospital, Marion, to Kansas Heart Hospital, Wichita. The ambulance returned to Marion at 11:39 p.m.

9:28 a.m. — A 56-year-old woman having abdominal pain at the VFW campground in Marion was taken to St. Luke by Hillsboro ambulance, filling in for Marion ambulance.

10:50 a.m. — A 68-year-old man feeling numb from the waist down was taken by Hillsboro ambulance from the 200 block of Grandview St. in Florence to Susan B. Allen Hospital, El Dorado. The ambulance returned to Hillsboro at 1:43 p.m. A first responder aboard Peabody ambulance assisted with the call.

1:09 a.m. — After waiting six minutes for Hillsboro ambulance to cross back into Marion County, Marion ambulance was sent to St. Luke to transfer a patient to NMC.

3:56 p.m. — An apparently uninjured woman involved in traffic accident at US-77 and 140th Rd. was checked by Marion ambulance attendants. She declined to be taken to a hospital. Florence firefighters and rescue squad members also were sent to the accident.

5:29 p.m. — Tampa ambulance stood by until 6:48 p.m. during a football game at Centre schools.

10:50 p.m. — An unconscious 70-year-old man at a farmhouse near 190th and Quail Creek Rds. was taken on an emergency basis by Marion ambulance to Ascension Via Christi St. Francis Hospital, Wichita. The ambulance returned to Marion at 1:29 a.m. Hillsboro ambulance also was dispatched.

FRIDAY

6:32 a.m. — A 97-year-old woman with severe lower abdominal pain was taken by Marion ambulance to St. Luke from the 400 block of Locust St. in Marion.

1:08 p.m. — The patient from the previous call was transferred by Marion ambulance from St. Luke to Wesley. The ambulance returned to Marion at 4:12 p.m.

5:23 p.m. — Tampa ambulance stood by until 8:31 p.m. during a football game at Centre schools.

5:42 p.m. — A small brush and grass fire at 120th Rd. and K-15 was extinguished within 20 minutes by Goessel firefighters.

5:57 p.m. — A 58-year-old man choking on food in the 200 block of E. 2nd St. in Peabody managed to dislodge the food on his own and declined to be treated by Peabody ambulance. Hillsboro ambulance also was dispatched but was turned back en route.

6:47 p.m. — Hillsboro ambulance stood by until receiving a call to go elsewhere during a football game at Joel Wiens Stadium in Hillsboro. Marion ambulance replaced Hillsboro ambulance at 8:04 p.m., remaining there until 9:32 p.m.

7:46 p.m. — A 64-year-old woman who fell off a curb and hurt her knee at Tabor College was taken by Hillsboro ambulance to NMC. The ambulance returned to Hillsboro at 9:46 p.m.

SATURDAY

6:10 a.m. — An 82-year-old man with swelling from a fall the day before was taken by Hillsboro ambulance to HCH for an X-ray ordered by his physician.

10:18 a.m. — The patient from the previous call was transferred on a non-emergency basis from HCH to Wesley by Hillsboro ambulance. The ambulance returned to Hillsboro at 12:34 p.m.

1:34 p.m. — Hillsboro ambulance stood by until 4:53 p.m. at Joel Wiens Stadium for a Tabor College football game.

8:28 p.m. — A grass fire ignited by an explosion, possibly of fireworks, at Kellison and Roosevelt Sts. in Marion was extinguished within 10 minutes by Marion firefighters, who remained on the scene for 15 additional minutes to investigate.

SUNDAY

4:48 a.m. — A Westview Manor patient receiving cardiopulmonary resuscitation because he was not breathing was pronounced dead by Hillsboro ambulance attendants. Marion ambulance also was dispatched after no response was received to a page for Peabody ambulance.

8:26 a.m. — An 8-year-old girl who fell in the 500 block of N. Coble St. in Marion and could not move her extremities was taken to St. Luke by Marion ambulance.

11:18 a.m. — The patient from the previous call was transferred by Marion ambulance from St. Luke to NMC for treatment of a fractured hip. The ambulance returned to Marion at 1:47 p.m.

3:28 p.m. — A 19-year-old with nausea and collarbone pain after being one of two people involved in a one-vehicle accident on US-50 east of Alfalfa Rd. was checked by Marion ambulance attendants at the request of a sheriff’s deputy but declined to be taken to a hospital.

MONDAY

10:45 a.m. — A 64-year-old man reported to be seizing after two days of not taking his medication chased a Peabody ambulance attendant out of his house in the 200 block of E. Division St. in Peabody. Hillsboro ambulance also responded, but both ambulances returned to their stations without treating or transporting the patient.

5:48 p.m. — Marion ambulance stood by until 8:04 p.m. during a football game at Marion Stadium.
