Broadcasts about these fire and ambulance calls were monitored this past week by the newspaper:

FEB. 15

12:54 p.m. — An 88-year-old woman who fell at Parkside Homes in Hillsboro was taken to Hillsboro Community Hospital by Hillsboro ambulance.

12:56 p.m. — A five-acre grass fire along railroad tracks west of Kanza Rd. on 320th Rd. was extinguished in about half an hour by Tampa and Durham firefighters. At the request of railroad officials, they stood by for another half an hour to guard against rekindling.

12:58 p.m. — Burns firefighters responded to a grass fire west of El Dorado in Butler County.

1:36 p.m. — Rekindling of a previous house fire in the 400 block of N. Pine St. in Peabody was extinguished in less than 20 minutes by Peabody firefighters.

1:52 p.m. — A diabetic 54-year-old man with a history of heart surgery and stroke fell at a residence in the 200 block of W. 2nd St. in Peabody and was taken to Newton Medical Center by Peabody ambulance. Marion ambulance also responded to the call.

2:05 p.m. — Spread by southerly winds of 38 to 48 mph, a grass fire at Bluestem and 170th Rds. was battled, initially by Marion and Florence firefighters, for a total of 5½ hours.

A second page requested additional responders from Marion. Peabody, and Burns firefighters for help. At 2:37 p.m., a countywide task force was activated, with Goessel, Hillsboro, Lincolnville, and Lost Springs firefighters summoned. Dispatches occasionally were confusing as to whether the task force should rendezvous on K-150 or five miles south on 150th Rd. Durham firefighters later were added to the task force.

Warning Chase County that the fire was headed there but had not yet reached the county line, Marion County initially turned down requests from Morris County for assistance with a grass fire near Burdick. Aircraft from Ft. Riley dropped water on the Marion County fire around 4 p.m.

Hillsboro ambulance was relocated to Nighthawk Rd. and US-56 to stand by for calls until Marion ambulance could complete backing up Peabody ambulance on its call and begin standing by at the fire.

4:05 p.m. — Lincolnville and Lost Springs firefighters were released from the Marion County fire to respond along with Ramona firefighters to a fire near Burdick in Morris County. Durham firefighters, later released from the Marion County fire, responded as well.

Marion County firefighters spent up to 6½ additional hours battling the Morris County blaze.

4:37 p.m. — An 88-year-old woman with a fractured hip was transferred by Hillsboro ambulance from HCH to Wesley Medical Center, Wichita.

5:39 p.m. — A 68-year-old woman who felt faint and fell in the 200 block of N. Buller St. in Goessel was helped up by a first responder from Goessel. She declined to be taken to a hospital by Marion ambulance.

FEB. 16

4:22 a.m. — A line downed on Cedar St. between 2nd and 3rd Sts. in Hillsboro was found by Hillsboro firefighters to be a cable TV line rather than a power line. Traffic was blocked while it was disconnected and removed from the street.

10:56 a.m. — Marion ambulance and the county ambulance director were summoned to St. Luke Hospital, Marion, to assist personnel there.

1:12 p.m. — A grass fire west of El Dorado in Butler County was battled for more than an hour by Burns firefighters.

1:32 p.m. — An accidentally activated medical alarm sent Hillsboro ambulance to an apartment in the 200 block of S. Ash St.

3:03 p.m. — Marion ambulance and the ambulance director again were sent to St. Luke to provide assistance, this time with lifting a patient.

5:29 p.m. — A woman in her 80s or 90s, feeling ill and vomiting at a duplex near Bethesda Home in Goessel, declined to be taken to a hospital by Hillsboro ambulance. A first responder from Goessel checked her before the ambulance arrived. An ambulance shift supervisor from Marion also responded but was told by Hillsboro ambulance that he was not needed.

THURSDAY

1:13 p.m. — A 72-year-old man feeling weak and unable to walk to a bathroom at a residence near 140th and Indigo Rds. was taken to HCH by Hillsboro ambulance.

8:49 a.m. — A 75-year-old woman having trouble breathing in the 100 block of E. 9th St. in Florence was taken to St. Luke by Marion ambulance.

3:30 p.m. — A semi-trailer truck skidded onto its side after hitting a patch of ice on US-50 three miles west of Florence. The driver reported no injuries and declined to be taken to a hospital by Peabody ambulance. A small amount of fuel and blood from cowhides in the trailer spilled onto the highway and was washed off by Peabody firefighters, who remained on the scene for five hours.

4:23 p.m. — A woman who fell and may have broken her ankle in front of Panzer Chiropractic Clinic in Hillsboro was taken to Newton Med by Hillsboro ambulance. Hillsboro firefighters help lift the woman.

6:09 p.m. — A medical alarm was activated by a 72-year-old woman who fell at Grand Oaks Apartments in Hillsboro. She was checked by a first responder from Hillsboro and declined to be taken to a hospital by Marion ambulance.

11:29 p.m. — A 64-year-old woman was transferred by Marion ambulance from St. Luke to Kansas Medical Center, Andover.

FRIDAY

2:42 a.m. — As soon as Marion ambulance returned to Marion, an HCH patient was transferred to Newton Med by Hillsboro ambulance.

6:23 p.m. — A 68-year-old woman, bleeding from the back of her head and wedged between a toilet and a wall after falling in a bathroom in the 200 block of N. Buller St. in Goessel, was taken to HCH by Hillsboro ambulance. First responders from Goessel and an ambulance shift supervisor assisted with the call.

SATURDAY

12:46 a.m. — A 58-year-old woman was transferred by Hillsboro ambulance from HCH to Kansas Heart Hospital, Wichita, for a cardiology consultation.

1:53 a.m. — An 84-year-old woman who fell at Parkside Homes in Hillsboro declined to be taken to a hospital by Marion ambulance, which responded because Hillsboro ambulance was in Wichita on the previous call.

2:21 p.m. — A 70-year-old man who lost consciousness after slipping and falling on ice in front of the Marion Post Office was taken to St. Luke by Marion ambulance. Hillsboro ambulance initially responded as well but that call was canceled.

4:45 p.m. — A 75-year-old man was transferred by Marion ambulance from St. Luke Living Center to Wesley Medical Center, Wichita.

5:22 p.m. — Contacted by an off-duty emergency medical technician who arrived in a private vehicle before Hillsboro ambulance could arrive, two men involved in a one-car accident at US-77 and K-256 declined to be checked or taken to a hospital.

SUNDAY

10:57 a.m. — A 10-year-old boy with impaired movement after falling and hitting the back of his head at Hillsboro Mennonite Brethren Church was taken to Wesley by Hillsboro ambulance.

3:21 p.m. — A 65-year-old heart attack patient was transferred from St. Luke to Wesley by Marion ambulance.

5:07 p.m. — A car-deer accident east of Nighthawk Rd. on 190th Rd. sent the vehicle’s two occupants to HCH. One suffered chest pains with atrial fibrillation. The other suffered back pains after slipping upon exiting their vehicle. Both were taken by Hillsboro ambulance. Marion ambulance, returning from Wichita, offered to assist but was not needed.

7:08 p.m. — A woman having trouble breathing at an apartment in the 300 block of N. Ash St. in Hillsboro was taken to HCH by Hillsboro ambulance.

MONDAY

12:27 a.m. — A 58-year-old man was transferred by Marion ambulance from St. Luke to Salina Regional Medical Center.

9:53 a.m. — A 62-year-old man found unconscious and not breathing in the 100 block of E. Main St. in Goessel received cardiopulmonary resuscitation from two Goessel first responders and Goessel firefighters until Hillsboro ambulance and an ambulance shift supervisor from Marion arrived. Resuscitation apparently proved unsuccessful.

11:56 a.m. — A 61-year-old woman in pain and disoriented at a house in the 800 block of N. Locust St. in Peabody was taken to Newton Med by Peabody ambulance. An ambulance shift supervisor from Marion met the ambulance en route to check the patient’s condition.

2:25 p.m. — A 70-year-old woman who fell and gashed her head at Wright’s Inc. in Hillsboro was taken to Newton Med by Hillsboro ambulance.

5:48 p.m. — A 14-year-old girl who hurt her neck at Marion Sports and Aquatic Center was taken to St. Luke by Marion ambulance after Florence’s fire chief radioed that she had been injured.
