Broadcasts about these fire and ambulance calls were monitored this past week by the newspaper:

JAN. 11

1:57 a.m. — An 81-year-old emotionally disturbed man who had been reported missing from McPherson County was located by a sheriff’s deputy in Marion County and checked by Marion ambulance attendants before being returned to McPherson County.

11:04 a.m. — An uninjured woman who fell at a residence in the 200 block of N. Cedar St. in Marion and needed help getting up was assisted by Marion ambulance attendants. She declined to be taken to a hospital.

1:26 p.m. — Burns firefighters were dispatched to a fire near El Dorado. They remained there for nearly 2½ hours.

2:28 p.m. — State inspectors asked for Peabody firefighters to check a suspicious odor of long standing at Westview Manor in Peabody to ensure that it was not a gas leak.

7:50 p.m. — A 57-year-old man experiencing chest pain was driven to Hillsboro’s ambulance station to be checked out by ambulance attendants. He apparently declined to be taken to a hospital.

11:47 p.m. — A 52-year-old man with a slow pulse and low blood pressure at Westview Manor in Peabody was taken to St. Luke Hospital in Marion by Marion ambulance.

JAN. 12

6:32 a.m. — A 74-year-old man having trouble breathing at a residence in the 200 block of W. 11th St. in Florence was taken to St. Luke by Marion ambulance. Florence first responders were called but did not answer.

9:40 a.m. — A 74-year-old woman unable to get up after having fallen twice in the past two days was taken by Hillsboro ambulance to Hillsboro Community Hospital from a residence near 220th and Alamo Rds. First responders from Goessel initially were called but were told to disregard the call because it was outside their service area. Hearing that and knowing that Hillsboro ambulance was responding from Marion, where attendants had been training, a first responder from Hillsboro rescue squad volunteered to assist and was first to arrive.

1:14 p.m. — A suspected stroke victim incorrectly identified as a 70-year-old man was taken by Marion ambulance to St. Luke from a residence at Pilsen. Lincolnville first responders were called but did not answer.

7:35 p.m. — A 72-year-old man with breathing and stomach difficulties and a history of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease was taken by Hillsboro ambulance from Salem Home in Hillsboro to HCH.

11:23 p.m. — A 79-year-old man with complications of COPD was taken by Hillsboro ambulance to HCH from Parkside Homes.

THURSDAY

2:24 a.m. — A 95-year-old man bleeding from a urinary tube inserted the day before was checked by Peabody ambulance attendants but on physicians’ orders declined to be taken to a hospital and instead was told to be driven to a hospital in the morning. The call was to a residence near 80th and Eagle Rds. Initial dispatches did not provide a location. Ambulance attendants asked for it and for directions on how to get there.

7:49 a.m. — A 56-year-old woman with left-side abdominal pain was taken to HCH by Hillsboro ambulance from a residence near US-56 and Mustang Rd.

11:17 a.m. — A fire alarm at Tabor College townhouses was quickly determined by Hillsboro firefighters to have been caused by a cooking mishap.

11:57 a.m. — An 83-year-old woman who tripped and fell outside Nex-Tech Wireless in Hillsboro was taken to St. Luke by Hillsboro ambulance.

12:39 p.m. — An HCH patient needing a computerized tomography scan was transferred to St. Luke and back to HCH by Hillsboro ambulance. The ambulance returned to HCH at 2:14 p.m.

2:19 p.m. — A St. Luke trauma patient was transferred to Newton Medical Center by Marion ambulance.

5:59 p.m. — An 83-year-old woman suffering chest pains was taken by Marion ambulance to Newton Med from the 100 block of Kansas St. in Lincolnville. A Lincolnville first responder helped with the call, arriving four minutes before the ambulance did.

FRIDAY

6:37 a.m. — An 83-year-old man suffering diarrhea for four days was taken by Marion ambulance to St. Luke from the 300 block of S. Roosevelt St. in Marion.

7:11 a.m. — A woman suffering chest pains and feeling dizzy activated a medical alarm in the 300 block of Grandview St. in Florence and was taken to St. Luke by Marion ambulance.

11:50 a.m. — A St. Luke patient was transferred to Newton Med by Marion ambulance.

8:41 p.m. — A possibly suicidal woman at a residence near 230th and Diamond Rds. was checked by Hillsboro ambulance attendants but taken to HCH by a sheriff’s deputy.

8:52 p.m. — St. Luke requested assistance from Marion ambulance attendants with a bypass machine. A dispatcher said hospital personnel “were not quite sure how to work it correctly.” The ambulance returned to its station at 9:44 p.m.

11:08 p.m. — A Westview Manor patient with low blood pressure, low blood-oxygen levels, and difficulty breathing was prepared by a Peabody first responder for transport by Marion ambulance, but care home officials decided while the ambulance was less than six blocks away that transportation would not be necessary. When a Marion ambulance attendant asked whether Westview staff might want to confer, the Peabody responder said: “They said, no, they got a R.N. that’s here.”

SATURDAY

2:21 a.m. — A 54-year-old man with breathing issues was transferred by Hillsboro ambulance from HCH to Wesley Woodlawn Hospital, Wichita.

5:55 a.m. — A woman who activated a medical alarm after having trouble breathing in the 200 block of N. Cedar St. in Marion was taken to St. Luke by Marion ambulance with assistance from the county ambulance service’s director.

7:41 a.m. — A Salem Home patient in his 80s who was having difficulty breathing was taken to HCH by Hillsboro ambulance.

8:25 a.m. — An 84-year-old woman who became dizzy after taking a shower at a residence in the 300 block of W. B St. in Hillsboro was taken to Ascension Via Christi St. Francis Hospital, Wichita, by Hillsboro ambulance. Hillsboro firefighters helped lift the patient.

1:46 p.m. — A 77-year-old man experiencing dizziness and vomiting after heart surgery was taken by Tampa ambulance to St. Luke from the 600 block of Wichita Ave. in Lincolnville. Lincolnville first responders arrived 10 minutes before the ambulance and assisted with the call.

4:49 p.m. — Marion ambulance went to St. Luke for unannounced reasons and did not return to its station until 6:37 p.m.

6:18 p.m. — An HCH patient with pneumonia was transferred by Hillsboro ambulance to Newton Med.

SUNDAY

1:05 a.m. — An 86-year-old man complaining of diarrhea and stomach pain was taken by Marion ambulance to HCH from the 300 block of S. Roosevelt St. in Marion.

3:14 p.m. — Hillsboro firefighters shut off gas to a leaking meter that had been struck by a vehicle in the 100 block of N. Cedar St. in Hillsboro.

4:01 p.m. — An intubated patient at St. Luke was transferred to Newton Med by Marion ambulance.

9:02 p.m. — A 72-year-old woman having trouble breathing at Hilltop Manor in Marion was taken on an emergency basis by Marion ambulance to rendezvous with Hillsboro ambulance before both were diverted from St. Francis to HCH.

MONDAY

1:01 p.m. — A patient being treated for a hip fracture was transferred from a garbled location, presumably Newton Med, to St. Luke by Marion ambulance.

4:27 p.m. — A 75-year-old woman coughing up blood and sick for more than a week was taken by Marion ambulance to St. Luke from the 100 block of E. 9th St. in Florence. Florence first responders were paged but did not answer.

5:35 p.m. — A 72-year-old man unable to get up and having trouble breathing after falling several hours earlier was taken by Peabody ambulance to St. Luke from the 700 block of Newell St. in Peabody. Peabody firefighters helped lift the patient. Ambulance attendants were warned before transferring the patient that Newton Med no longer was accepting patients from outside Harvey County.

8:40 p.m. — A disoriented 92-year-old woman at Salem Home was taken to HCH by Hillsboro ambulance. Ambulance attendants remained at the hospital to help staff there after the patient stopped breathing.
