Broadcasts about these fire and ambulance calls were monitored this past week by the newspaper:


2:13 a.m. — A prisoner at Marion County Jail was taken to St. Luke Hospital by Marion ambulance then transferred at 5:18 a.m. to Via Christi – St. Francis Hospital, Wichita, by a helicopter ambulance. A sheriff’s deputy accompanied the prisoner. He was relieved by a second deputy after noon.

8:37 a.m. — A woman who fell at a residence in the 300 block of N. Lincoln St. in Hillsboro was found not breathing by Hillsboro ambulance, which then requested assistance from Marion ambulance and Hillsboro firefighters before taking the patient to Hillsboro Community Hospital.

4:29 p.m. — Instead of being immediately arrested on suspicion of drunken driving, a motorist stopped by sheriff’s deputies on US-50 east of Pawnee Rd. was taken to St. Luke by Peabody ambulance after he complained of low blood sugar. Deputies arranged for a blood-alcohol test at the hospital.

Meanwhile, a passenger in the vehicle was arrested on suspicion of multiple drug possession and distribution charges after a search that was prompted by a police dog indicating drugs might be present.

9:23 p.m. — A woman in pain and with declining blood pressure after falling several hours earlier at Parkside Homes in Hillsboro was taken to HCH by Hillsboro ambulance.

9:53 p.m. — A patient at Westview Manor in Peabody who fell and hurt his neck was checked by Peabody ambulance, which informed dispatchers that it would take the patient to Newton Medical Center “for the nurses’ sake.”


3:30 a.m. — A man who couldn’t get up at a residence in the 700 block of S. Freeborn St. was taken to St. Luke by Marion ambulance.

9:30 a.m. — A 60-year-old woman complaining of an infection after a recent knee surgery taken to St. Luke by Marion ambulance from the 1500 block of Victory Lane. Marion firefighters helped lift her.

10:28 a.m. — A 35-year-old man who fell and hurt his knee at Barkman Honey in Hillsboro was taken to HCH by Marion ambulance. Hillsboro ambulance inexplicably was not available, and the county emergency medical services director was filling in as a member of the Marion ambulance crew.

11:50 a.m. — An alarm from a smoke detector on the second floor of a farmhouse on 180th Rd. between Diamond and Eagle Rds. turned out to be only a test. Hillsboro firefighters were told to disregard the call four minutes after they were summoned.

12:05 p.m. — A helicopter ambulance apparently delivered a patient back to St. Luke.

1:51 p.m. — A St. Luke patient was transferred to Newton Medical by Marion ambulance.

5:35 p.m. — Fred Jones Jr., 47, was found dead at his residence in the 200 block of Prospect St. in Lehigh. Sheriff’s deputies, Hillsboro ambulance, and a deputy coroner all responded, and Marion ambulance briefly headed that way in case resuscitation was needed.

According to a news release from the sheriff’s office, there appears to be “no criminal cause” in the death, but an autopsy is pending.

Hillsboro ambulance remained at the scene until 7:32 p.m.

7:08 p.m. — A unresponsive but breathing 85-year-old women at Parkside Homes was taken to HCH by Marion ambulance.


10:48 a.m. — A 66-year-old woman who fell in her garden, hurt her shoulder, and could not get up was taken from her farm near 70th and Jade Rds. to Newton Medical by Peabody ambulance.

2:10 p.m. — A 23-year-old woman having difficulty breathing after a memorial service on the ninth hole at Marion Country Club was examined by Marion-based EMTs but was not taken to a hospital.

4:07 p.m. — Burns firefighters were dispatched to an unstated location in Butler County for what turned out to be a controlled burn.

11:58 p.m. — A Salem Home resident who fell was taken to HCH by Hillsboro ambulance.


3:01 a.m. — An HCH patient was transferred to Wesley Medical Center, Wichita, by Hillsboro ambulance.

11:35 a.m. — A cardiac patient at St. Luke was transferred to Newton Medical by Marion ambulance.

8:27 p.m. — Peabody ambulance stood by as police and deputies interceded in what was described a drunken quarrel involving a possible mental patient in the 200 block of N. Elm St. in Peabody.


1:36 p.m. — Blinding dust created by vehicles driving through a large gravel spill on US-56 near Old Mill Rd. was combated by Marion firefighters spraying the spilled gravel with water. Firefighters remained on the scene for about an hour.

5:42 p.m. — A woman in an apartment in the 500 block of N. Vine St. in Peabody told dispatchers she was having trouble breathing because workers were tearing down a nearby structure. She asked police to stop the demolition. When police said they could not because a proper permit had been issued, Peabody ambulance was summoned and took her to St. Luke.


4:58 a.m. — Water leaking near electrical wires at a residence near US-56 and Upland Rd. was investigated by Marion firefighters.

12:20 p.m. — A man needing help to get out of a wheelchair and into his bed in the 400 block of S. Lincoln St. in Marion was assisted by Marion ambulance.

5:20 p.m. — A possible stroke victim in the 100 block of N. Roosevelt St. in Marion was taken to St. Luke by Marion ambulance.

6:05 p.m. — A woman who was having trouble getting out of a car in the 1500 block of Victory Lane was helped by Marion EMTs. She was not taken to a hospital.


11:42 a.m. — The county’s emergency medical services director checked a vehicle stuck in mud in a ditch on 190th Rd. two miles east of Hillsboro. Although dispatchers had given the driver a telephone number for a towing company, the EMS director went home, got a pickup truck, and attempted to free the vehicle himself. Hillsboro’s police chief apparently assisted.

4:30 p.m. — A 58-year-old Westview Manor patient, possibly with an obstructed bowel, was taken to Newton Medical by Marion ambulance.

4:40 p.m. — A patient at St. Luke Clinic was transferred to St. Francis by Hillsboro ambulance, which was filling in for Marion ambulance, which in turn was on a call filling in for Peabody ambulance.

11:43 p.m. — An 86-year-old woman who fell and hit her head in the 500 block of S. Wilson St. was taken to HCH by Hillsboro ambulance.
