Education important for medication disposal

Hillsboro’s Police Department has been participating in an annual collection of unused medication for several years, and Leanne Funk sees it as a helpful resource for Marion County.
“I think it’s useful for people who have medicine they don’t know what to do with,” Funk, a rural Hillsboro resident, said.
The process ensures fewer drugs are sent to landfills, and removes the danger of having them around someone’s house, police chief Dan Kinning said.
“If someone knows it’s there, they’ll break in and take it,” he said. “It’s also to help keep bad drugs from being thrown in landfills or getting into our water systems.”
Accepted drugs vary from narcotics or mental health medicine to blood pressure medication.
This year’s medication take-back will be 10 to 2 p.m. Saturday at Hillsboro Police Department.
Funk has a sister in the medical field who keeps her informed about proper disposal of medication but realizes other people may not have that luxury.
