Donald Nightengale
Donald E. “Don” Nightengale, age 80, passed away March 3, 2016, at Asbury Park of Newton.
He was born April 15, 1935, at Canton, Kansas. He was the son of Sam and Della (Luginbill) Nightengale. He graduated from Burns High School in 1953, where he was a member of the 1953 state-champion basketball team.
On Sept. 20, 1955, he was united in marriage to the love of his life, Twylah Schmidt. Their marriage was blessed with three daughters: Peggy, Janet, and Carol. They made their home near Florence, where Don was a farmer and rancher. He also was an oil field pumper.
Don was an active member of Homestead Friends Church in Clements, where he served as treasurer. After its closing, they attended Florence Christian Church. When they moved to Newton, they joined Salem United Methodist Church.
Don enjoyed playing cards and watching a good ball game. He was a loving husband, spoiling father, and fun grandfather.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Melvin Nightengale; and a sister, Betty Lou Nightengale.
He is lovingly survived by his wife Twylah (Schmidt) Nightengale of Newton; daughters, Peggy Leitzen and husband Doug of Marengo, Illinois; Janet Turner and husband Bud of Eureka; and Carol Nightengale of Topeka; siblings, Marvin Nightengale and wife Sherol of Burns; and Barbara Moore of Wichita; five grandchildren, Rusty Turner, Adam Turner, Luke Turner, Jeremy Leitzen, and Amanda Pointer; and 20 great-grandchildren.
Visitation with family was to be from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Zeiner Funeral Home, Marion. A funeral service was to be at 10 a.m. Wednesday, March 9, 2016, at Salem United Methodist Church, Newton. Interment will follow in Burns Cemetery.
