Another day, another Dollar General to be built in the county

Staff writer

The first week of August is the projected date for the opening of a Dollar General store in Peabody.

Peabody city council met in a quick session Tuesday evening to decide on rezoning a parcel of property owned by Gilbert Loewen from agricultural use to business use. The request arose from the intended sale of the property to Dollar General, which wants to build a store at Peabody.

Of the handful of observers at the meeting, no one said a word when council members Steve Rose, Tom Spencer, Janice Woodruff and Rick Reynolds called for comments from the public.

Jim Rippe, chairman of Peabody’s planning and zoning committee, said their own meeting to consider the rezoning was sparsely attended and no one brought objections.

“We found no reason to recommend other than rezoning,” Rippe told the council.

Council member Janice Woodruff moved to rezone the property, and the motion passed 4-0 with council member Megan Gallucci absent.

Developer Tyler Oliver said the chain’s intention is to start construction May 1 and open for business the first week of August.
