Peabody is mourning the death of its mayor, Tod Porter. He spent almost his entire life giving community service to his hometown, Peabody. He was a retired postmaster.

Donna Bloomer, a 1981 graduate of Peabody High School, is in her 11th year of teaching in the elementary school.

Bill and Shirley Krause returned home Saturday after spending two weeks visiting daughter, Denice at Jackson, Miss.

Fred Berns has been selected to be a member of the Peabody-Burns District 398 board of education, filling the vacancy created by the death of Robert Kerbs in July.

Beth Slocombe was crowned Homecoming queen in ceremonies held prior to the Hesston-Peabody game Friday night.

A car driven by Mary Jane Girard jumped the curb and rammed into the front of the Peabody Gazette. She reported her brakes failed completely as she parked.

Oct. 16, 1958

Peabody Warriors rolled over Council Grove 13-0 on Friday night.

Miss Mary Palmer, attractive Peabody High School senior, was crowned Homecoming Queen at halftime ceremonies at the Council Grove game Friday night. Attendants were Pam Herbert and Jean DeForest.

Gregory Pierce has taken a position as salesman with Prudential Insurance Company in Wichita. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Don Pierce of Peabody.

oct. 8, 1908

Ed Snavely bought an automobile in Elmdale, Thursday. It is a two cylinder Glide.

Les Bauslin sold a piano to D. L. Jackson last week.

Willis Westbrook went to Newton to see his daughter. She hopes to come home from the hospital next week.

Sept. 15, 1883

Wm. Lackey passed through Peabody lately, on his way to Raton, Colo., where he will fire an engine.

The work on the schoolhouse is progressing, though not as fast as we would like to see it. Eight workers have been employed and work has been commenced on the walls.

A basket meeting will be held by the Christians near Plum Grove at the campgrounds on the fourth Sunday in September, 1883. Meeting open to all.
