Cruise to Florence for Father's Day feast

Staff writer

Vendors, an all-you-can-eat breakfast, and a Father’s Day lunch of baby back ribs and fixin’s await weekend cruisers Sunday in Florence.

The event, sponsored by the Florence Advance Masonic Lodge 114 the third Sunday of every month through September, brings motorcycles and classic cars to town. Saturday’s cruise is the second event this year.

“We call it Crystal Spring Motorcycle and Classic Car Run,” lodge member Les Allison said. “Crystal Spring — or City Spring — is a nice area to visit and promotes a part of Florence not everyone knows about.”

The event draws out-of-towners who might never get off the highway to check out of the community, said post office employee Scott Zogelman said.

“Cruise groups enjoy the ride,” he said. “If Florence is the destination and we can get them into our community, they’ll spend a few dollars, have a good meal, and maybe come back or tell their friends.”

The Masons meet in the Florentine Building downtown, as do other community groups. It is equipped with a kitchen and meeting area.

Money raised will help repair the building and provide scholarships for area students.

“We offer scholarships to send students to band camp in the summer and we give scholarships to graduating seniors as well,” Allison said.

Allison will prepare baby back ribs for Sunday’s cruise.

“We’ll have other vendors and some cruise T-shirts,” he said. “And there will be a drawing for a metal art sculpture by Ron Goodwin at Burns.”

Breakfast will begin at 8:30 a.m., and the Masons will begin serving the Father’s Day lunch at 11:30 a.m. Donation will be accepted.
