CENTRE:   Cross-country reinstated

Staff writer

Several Centre students will be competing in cross-country this year. The program was discontinued after 2006, but renewed interest led the board of education to appoint teacher Cindy Riedel to assemble a team.

Riedel coached cross-country for two years before it was discontinued.

So far, nine students plan to participate. They are seniors Kevin Lewis and Amy Makovec, junior Nellie Kassebaum, sophomore Ally Basore, and seventh-graders Jordan Miller, Victoria Reneau, Jordan Smith, C.J. Thompson, and Tanner Wiggins.

Riedel said she expects runners to improve their times as the season progresses.

“This will require dedication and self discipline as cross-country, while competitive involves improving personal best times.”

Riedel is beginning with conditioning and then will teach stride, pacing, and becoming mentally competitive as the season progresses.

The first competition for both teams is at 4 p.m. Sept. 5 at Abilene.
