Conrad Steinel

A memorial service for former Marion instrumental music teacher Conrad “Connie” Steinel, 92, who died June 28 at his home in Emporia, will be 10:30 a.m. Friday at St. Mark’s Lutheran Church, Emporia.

Born July 15, 1926, in Clarkdale, Arizona, to Philemon Clarence and Marie (Schmidt) Steinel, he married Lois Josephine Danielson on Oct. 7, 1949, in Lindsborg.

A Navy veteran, amateur radio enthusiast, trumpet player, and piano tuner, he received his bachelor’s degree in music education from Bethany College and his master’s from Wichita State University.

He and his wife, a school librarian, taught in Marion schools from 1962 until 1971. They also taught in Gaylord, Cawker City, and Emporia. She died in November.

 Survivors include daughters Marcia Lehrman of Manhattan and Carol Steinel of Emporia; sons Daniel Steinel of Lenexa and Michael Steinel of Denton, Texas; five grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Memorials have been established with the church and Hand in Hand Hospice.
