Charity gift market returning to Marion

Organizers are planning another Marion County Alternative Gift Market this year.

This year’s event, which will benefit five local and 30 national and international charities, is 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Nov. 10 at Marion Presbyterian Church, 610 Lawrence St., Marion.

Attendees select a charity cause to support in someone’s name, and in return receive a Christmas ornament or card to give to their gift recipient. The 2011 market raised more than $4,000 with 150 shoppers, local coordinator Jackie Volbrecht said. She hopes the number of shoppers doubles this year.

“It’s not totally about raising funds,” Volbrecht said. “It’s also to raise awareness about these charities and give our local nonprofits a chance to make person-to-person contacts.”

This year’s local charities represented are Big Brothers Big Sisters of Marion County, Families and Communities Together, Circles of Hope of Marion County, the Shepherd’s Shed, and Feeding the Orphans — Marion Christian Church’s special mission emphasis this year.

Sponsoring booths this year are Marion Presbyterian Church, Marion Christian Church, Eastmoor United Methodist Church, Valley United Methodist Church, Good News Christian Fellowship, Marion City Library, SteppingStones Preschool, and three Girl Scout troops.

There will be a food court, with proceeds benefiting Marion County Emergency Food Bank. There will also be live music.
