An Arbor Day event on the campus of Emporia State University campus Saturday will honor former Peabody resident and 1994 Peabody-Burns High School graduate Ethan Schmidt.
The special tree planting will honor Schmidt, an Emporia State alumnus, who was fatally shot in his office at Delta State University in Cleveland, Mississippi, Sept. 15, 2015.
Schmidt earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees at ESU and was a member of Phi Delta Theta fraternity.
The fraternity has organized the Dr. Ethan Schmidt Memorial Tree Planting at 1:30 p.m. on the lawn south of Roosevelt Hall. Schmidt’s family plans to attend the planting of an English oak tree in Schmidt’s memory. Later in the day Schmidt’s wife, Elizabeth, will present a scholarship named in his honor.
