Centre splits 4 games in 2 days

In a weekend made busy by makeup games, Centre boys and girls both split a pair of contests.

Boys

Mikey Silhan and Luke Hudson were stars Friday of the boys’ game at Herington.

The first half made it look as if it was going to be a tough matchup against Herington, which has won only once this season.

Centre led by just one point, 16-15, at halftime. But a field goal by Silhan and a three-pointer and a free throw by Hudson gave the Cougars a more comfortable nine-point lead. Silhan and Hudson combined for 20 points in the fourth quarter for a 52-37 victory.

Hudson scored 24 points, including 19 rebounds and five assists. Silhan scored 20 points.

No other Cougar scored in double figures.

The first half of Saturday’s game against 10-4 Wichita Classical gave the Cougars hope for another victory. They trailed by just six points at halftime.

But the second half belonged to the Saints as they made numerous scoring runs and quickly built a big lead. Centre outscored the Saints, 11-5, in the fourth quarter, but lost, 59-35.

Silhan was the only player in double digits, with 12 points.

After a game Tuesday against Little River, the Cougars (7-7 through the weekend) are scheduled to take on Peabody-Burns on Friday.

Girls

After losing 59-25 Friday to Herington on the road, the girls got their second victory of the season, 39-33, at home Saturday against Wichita Classical.

Carlye Deines scored first with a free throw and a field goal, but the Saints scored eight unanswered points to lead, 8-3.

The Cougars came back strong, however, with a field goal and free throw by Alex Remmers and another by Deines to tie the game, 8-8, at the end of the first quarter.

Lexis Brewer, Deines, Remmers, Jenna Bittle, and Katy Bina combined for 10 points in the second quarter, and Centre led Wichita Classic, 22-18, at halftime.

The Saints were outscored 9-4 in the third quarter but came back within two points in the fourth. Two three-pointers by Remmers and two free throws by Deines gave the Cougars a six-point victory.

Deines led scoring with 17 points, including two three-pointers. Remmers scored 10 points, also including two threes.
