Centre gets revenge; other teams fall behind

After falling to Wakefield at home in the first game of the season, the Cougars defeated the. It was Centre’s first victory of the season.
“We played man-to-man defense, which threw them off,” coach Richard Idleman said. “It was a nice win. We needed it.”
The Cougars had their highest scoring game of the year, shooting 44.1% overall.
Nick Krch had a good night, scoring 20 points. Robert Spohn and Santiago Knepp also scored in double digits, 11 and 10 points, respectively.
Gentri Holub’s seven rebounds were at both ends of the court. Knepp and Ja’Quin Smith each had six rebounds.
“The team had 16 steals altogether, and they had good shooting overall,” Idleman said. “I was pleased.”
The team is 1-2 in league play.
Goessel loses tough challenge
Two teams, evenly matched, both with good athletes but not much height described the contest Friday night at Goessel.
The Bluebirds got ahead by six points in the first quarter, but a three-pointer by Solomon at the buzzer cut Goessel’s lead to 14-11.
Goessel held the lead in the second quarter, but just barely, as Solomon got within one point several times. The Bluebirds held a slim lead at halftime, 26-24.
The Gorillas took the lead in the second half, scoring the first seven points. Scoring from the Bluebirds in the third quarter came from Grant Bryant, Noah Schrag, and Joey Lapp. Goessel got ahead, 36-33, during the quarter, but Solomon led at the break, 40-38.
Goessel missed all five free-throw attempts in the fourth quarter, and Bluebirds scoring was absent for three minutes as Solomon ran time off the clock with a seven-point lead. Solomon won the Wheat State League game by a final score of 51-44.
Noah Schrag netted 15 points followed by Joey Lapp with 13. The Goessel boys finished the week with a record of 4-3 overall and 2-1 in league games.
Marion falls behind early
Marion lost Friday’s road non-conference game against Moundridge, 65-45.
Marion was slow to start in scoring, and Moundridge took advantage by jumping ahead quickly.
The Warriors never were able to slow down Moundridge or rally back into the game.
This week the Warriors will host Remington and Inman at home.
“This past week was tough for us preparing for two of the top teams in our league.”
“Our boys have made a lot of improvements this year already and I am proud of how they continued to work each day.”
“Also, some of our young players have really started to come along. I felt Carson Krause, Luke Wessel, and Luke Watkins played their best games of the season and are starting to make meaningful contributions,” coach Raymer said.
Other teams
Hillsboro did not play last week. Peabody-Burns did not report its results.
