Centre basketball teams win league openers

The Centre boys’ and girls’ basketball teams rolled over Elyria Christian Tuesday on the road in the first league games of the season.

The boys defeated the Eagles 69-34.

They outscored Elyria 27-10 and 16-9 in the first two quarters, respectively, to lead 43-19 at halftime. Ty Simons piled up five field goals and seven free throws for 17 points on the game. Grant Srajer and Conner Montgomery each sunk a trey. Jared Barney, Dakota Stimpson, and Kyle Methvin also contributed points.

The Cougars made 26 points in the second half, including treys by Stimpson and Nathaniel Engler, compared with 15 by Elyria to win by 35 points.

Simons led scoring, followed by Montgomery 16, and Stimpson 14.

Girls

The Lady Cougars defeated Elyria 51-30.

Shelby Makovec, Brenna Shields, Ally Basore, Makenzie Deines and Cacey Simons made first-quarter points, giving Centre a 14-2 lead.

Simons shot for 7 points and Amy Makovec 5 in the second quarter, leading Centre to a 30-7 halftime lead.

The second-half scoring wasn’t quite as lopsided, but the Lady Cougars walked away with a convincing 21-point victory.

Simons finished with 17 points, followed by Shelby Makovec with 15, Deines 7, Amy Makovec 5, Shields 4, and Basore 3.

The first games of the new year will be at home Jan. 7 against Peabody-Burns.
