Center's kitchen floor to be replaced

Having received a $2,300 grant from Peabody Community Foundation, Peabody Senior Center will begin replacing its damaged kitchen floor Friday.

The center will be closed all next week for construction. However, meals still will be delivered, and dIne-in meals will be served at 11 a.m. daily at Peabody Christian Church, 115 E Division St., Reservations are required and may be made before 9:30 a.m. daily at (620) 983-2226.

Some of the most recent damage to the floor occurred during flooding in June 2021 — the same storm that caused costly and contentious dam erosion at Marion County Lake. Despite sandbagging, water six inches deep rushed into the center after Walnut Creek overflowed. Rugs that had been replaced only two years earlier after less extreme flooding were sanitized but not replaced.

Floodwater gushing from a storm drain also washed out the base of train tracks downtown.
