Celebrating with fireworks has its limits

Staff writer

Nothing says Fourth of July like fireworks, but when fireworks can be used is limited.

“The largest issue that we’ve had is the discharge of fireworks after the time frames,” Marion city administrator Roger Holter said. “Most of those have been resolved as officers make a request for them to stop.”

Marion County times for discharging fireworks are 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. today through Friday, and 8 a.m. to midnight Saturday through Monday. Fireworks may be discharged outside city limits, on private property, and at Marion County Lake (not the reservoir).

Individual cities have their own separate schedules for fireworks.

Fireworks can be discharged in Marion Friday and Saturday between 9 a.m. and 10 p.m. and between 9 a.m. and midnight Sunday and Monday.

Hillsboro will allow fireworks between 10 a.m. and 11 p.m. Friday through Sunday and 10 a.m. to midnight Monday.

In Peabody, fireworks can be shot off between 8 a.m. and midnight Friday through Monday.

Goessel residents may shoot of fireworks between 8 a.m. and midnight Friday, Saturday, and Monday, and 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. Sunday and Tuesday.

Florence allows the most days of fireworks. They have been legal there since Monday and are allowed between 8 a.m. and 10 p.m. through Friday and between 8 a.m. and midnight Saturday through Monday.

Residents in Ramona may shoot off fireworks between 8 a.m. and 1 a.m. Monday. County rules apply for the rest of the days.

Kansas fire marshal urges firework users not to point fireworks at people, buildings, or animals and not to attempt to relight malfunctioning fireworks.

Fireworks should be stored in a cool, dry place and not shot in metal or glass containers. Water should be nearby in case of fire, and only one firework should be lighted at a time.

It is illegal to shoot fireworks on or under a vehicle, on any public roadway, or within 50 feet of a fireworks stand, gas stations, or places where propane is stored.
