Caution over possible land scam urged

Some Marion County landowners are receiving letters from a Texas company offering to buy their property.
Those letters cause Sheriff Jeff Soyez concern.
A letter recently sent to one county resident offered to purchase 123.5 acres for $169,142.76.
The property owner who got the letter Soyez provided has a plot the size described in the letter, but the appraised value is $45,210.
The letter, from BCP Land in Frisco, Texas, asks the recipient to sign a purchase agreement and mail it back to the company before Sept. 12.
The letter said the company’s source of information about the land was “the Marion County Assessor.”
“BCPLand.com is a property investment company that prides itself on fast, professional, easy transactions, and seller satisfaction,” the letter reads.
Soyez said people could be taken advantage of.
“They are actually signing a property sales agreement, and they might be selling their property for a quarter of what it’s worth,” Soyez said.
To warn property owners not to be taken in by a possible scam, the sheriff’s office is cautioning county residents.
“We’re reaching out to senior centers and places like that,” Soyez told county commissioners Monday.
