Cathy Henderson

A memorial service for Cathy Kay Franklin Henderson, 84, Marion, who died Aug. 3 at Newton Medical Center, will be 1 p.m. Aug. 29 at Marion Presbyterian Church.

Born Jan. 11, 1942, in Sterling, Colorado, to Gerald and Golda (Fowler) Franklin, she grew up in Nebraska, graduated from Syracuse High School in Kansas in 1960 and from Wesley School of Nursing in 1963. She completed a credential of advanced studies in patient care administration in 1981 from the University of Minnesota, and received a bachelor of science in nursing from Saint Mary of the Plains College in Dodge City in 1985.

She worked primarily in nursing homes and teaching nursing.

She married Lynn D. Carter on Dec. 26, 1964, in Syracuse. He died in 1978. She married fellow widower Gerald “Gerry” Henderson on July 5, 1981. They lived in El Dorado, then Topeka, and finally in 1998, moved to Marion.

After she retired as a Head Start nurse and he as school superintendent, they took leadership positions in what became Marion County Food Bank.

Gerry Henderson died in November, 2024. Also preceding her in death was a son, Scott Carter, in June, 2021.

Survivors include brother Gerald Franklin Jr., sister LoJean Franklin Oleen, sons Andy Carter and John Henderson, daughter Barbra Henderson White, five grandchildren, and a great-grandson.

Memorials have been established with the food bank, the church, and Westminster Woods Camp.
