Cancelation doesn’t stop lake residents

Staff writer

Tracy Hett has lived at Marion County Lake for nine years, and for the first time since he moved in, there has been no parade of vehicles filled with people driving by to admire his Christmas lights.

“We’ve had a few cars out here,” he said. “But nothing like we’d have most years.”

This year’s Tunnel of Lights was canceled, and resident Margie Schwartz said it was not possible for many residents to participate this year for a variety of reasons ranging from a death in someone’s family to health.

The event normally takes place the first weekend in December.

Decorating the yard this season was a habit for Hett, even without an event to prepare for.

“We’ve just done it because we normally did it,” he said. “We’ve lost some people out here, and a lot of the people are more elderly who do have time.”

Even with a variety of lawn decorations and Christmas lights, Hett downplayed how grand his display was compared to residents of years past.

“All these neighbors to the north, what I have is nothing compared to what they’d done,” he said.
