Butler County also wants county trash

Staff writer

Marion County Transfer Station Manager Rollin Schmidt reported Monday to Marion County Commission that Butler County Landfill was willing to take the county’s solid waste for $30 per ton but no other information would be available until the landfill director met with the Butler County Commission.

The commission has been looking at other options of disposing of county residents’ trash, specifically at a landfill closer to home.

Saline County Municipal Landfill also made an offer between $29 and $30 per ton, depending on the length of the contract.

Schmidt was instructed to determine the exact mileage from the transfer station to the Butler County Landfill. Previously Schmidt had determined that it was 65 miles to the Saline County landfill.

In other business:

  • Architect Tony Rangle of Law Kingdon, Inc. of Wichita, and the commission finalized brochures and presentation information in preparation for a series of public meetings throughout the county to discuss the possibilities of a new county jail.
  • The commission approved salary increases for road and bridge superintendent John Summerville from $3,120 per month to $3,432. The commission also compared the job descriptions of public works director and road and bridge superintendent, making minor adjustments to better fit the position.
  • A pay increase for Mark Heiser also was approved. Heiser was promoted to section foreman. His salary increased from $2,150 per month to $2,800.
