Burn workshop planned

A prescribed burning workshop will be 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Nov. 30 at the senior center in Tampa. Registration begins at 9:30 a.m.

Reservations are required because Marion County Conservation District, Marion Reservoir Watershed Resources and Protection Strategy, and Flint Hills Graziers will serve a free lunch. Pre-registration is requested by Nov. 24 and can be sent by e-mail to betty.richmond@ks.nacdnet.net or by calling (620) 382-3520.

Area producers will have an opportunity to learn about prescribed burning, including what is involved with conducting a prescribed burn and how to obtain valuable weather data. Producer-built equipment that can be used safely to conduct a burn will be viewed as well.

Workshop topics will include reasons for burning; notification, regulations, and permits; weather; liability; using a burn contractor and burning assistance; equipment; hazards and firebreaks; and how to plan and conduct a burn.

The program will also include local producers who will show equipment and share personal burn experiences.
