Brunner defends beef checkoff

Staff writer

Tracy Brunner of Ramona, vice president of the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association, spoke at a beef producers’ seminar in Emporia on Aug. 22.

He defended the beef checkoff, in which one dollar is subtracted from the price cattlemen receive for each head that they sell, as a means to share information with consumers on the safety and nutritious quality of beef.

He praised the free enterprise, capitalist system as the greatest system ever developed.

“Patriotism is based on the premise that people have the right and the ability to self-govern,” he said. “And I would submit to you that no other nation has so profoundly proven that to be true. No other nation has so definitively and successfully proven democracy to its fullest.”
