Boil water advisory issued for Durham

A boil water advisory was issued Thursday for Durham.

Failure of disinfection equipment could cause chlorine levels in the city’s water system to drop and put the system at risk of bacterial contamination, Kansas Department of Health and Environment reported in issuing the order.

Residents and businesses are being urged to use bottled water, available at the community center, or to boil water for one minute before drinking it or using it to prepare food. Ice from trays and automatic ice makers should be discarded.

Water that appears dirty should be allowed to run until it clears. Water generally does not need to be boiled for bathing, but children should be supervised to keep them from swallowing it.

The advisory will remain in effect until conditions that put the system at risk are resolved.

The advisory will be rescinded only after KDHE tests the water through a certified laboratory.
