Be Creative @ Your Library

Contributing writer

The 2009 Summer Reading Collaborative Library theme is Be Creative @ Your Library.  The program is June 1-31.

All ages are encouraged to visit Peabody Township Library to sign-up by June 9 to meet a reading goal for a prize.  Story time sessions for Pre-K–sixth grade, with activities and snacks, will meet 9:30-10:30 a.m. Tuesdays (June 9, 16, 23, 30 and July 7).

Adult and teen helpers also are needed for the program.  There will be a meeting at 9:30 a.m. June 2, at the library to prepare for the children’s story time sessions.  Junior high and high school students are encouraged to attend and also will be part of the “Express Yourself @ Your Library” teen program that will help to make reading an exciting adventure for younger children.

This year the Summer Reading Program has challenges.

The Ann Potter Room, which is the traditional meeting place of the program, is in the process of repair after professional mold remediation that required removal of the carpet and ceiling tiles.

The library board has sought funds to make the basement serviceable again. To date, some assistance has come from the Peabody Community Fund to make the restroom usable.

Donations are needed from the community to speed-up the process of making the basement useable again for community events.

With much of the library’s operational funding being diverted to repairs and restoration, money is limited for the summer reading program.  To ensure that participants of the summer reading program have prizes, activities, and snacks, board members are needing financial assistance from the community.

Prizes include books and incentive prizes offered from the CSLP (Collaborative Summer Library Program), so cash donations may be given.

Other needed items include snacks such as Goldfish crackers, Bugles snacks, Scrabble Cheese-Its, clear soda like Sprite, juice, and any healthy items that children will eat.

Supplies include fly swatters, poster paint, hand wipes, paper towels, and disposable drinking cups.  Donors may sign-up at the library by June 9 to bring the items by the date needed or to see what items are still needed.
