People in the central Kansas area soon will have a second chance to learn about artifacts they have found or collected.

The Mud Creek chapter of Kansas Anthropological Association will have a workshop in Marion Sept. 22 for the second consecutive year.

“There was a great response in 2017, and many indicated they wished for a prompt return,” said chapter president Baron Shively.

The event will be 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Santa Fe Room of Marion City Library.

Chapter secretary Rose Marie Wallen calls it a show-and-tell event.

“A lot of times people have a ‘whatzit,’” Wallen said. “It’s old, it’s made of iron, and it’s part of some equipment, but they don’t know what.

“We have a spread of tables with lamps and magnifiers. You just come up to the table and show what you have, and once you’re satisfied with your information, you can go on your way.”

Professional and experienced amateur archaeologists will be available to help collectors identify and date Native American artifacts.

No appraisals or sales will be made. The workshop is a free public service to improve knowledge of Kansas’ archeological heritage.

Light refreshments will be served.

Library director Janet Marler said her staff would be displaying books and resources related to artifacts for people to look at.
