Armed return ends in arrest

Staff writer

A 26-year-old Marion man was arrested early Sunday after leaving a quarrel at a rental home and allegedly returning with a firearm.

Derrick E. Ratzloff was arrested on suspicion of aggravated assault after the incident at 2:13 a.m. in the 600 block of S. Cedar St. in Marion.

He was taken to Marion County Jail but released 12½ hours later after posting a $15,000 surety bond. He previously was jailed July 5 on suspicion of driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol and transporting an open container of alcohol.

According to assistant police chief Steven Janzen, Ratzloff was involved in a verbal altercation, left, then returned a short time later with a firearm.

Janzen said that the incident remained under investigation Monday and that an official offense report would not be released “until we’ve determined all the potential charges involved.”

Marion police officer Zach Hudlin made the arrest. According to monitored radio transmissions, he was backed up by sheriff’s deputy Joshua Meliza.

The rental unit is owned by a limited liability company controlled by Marion banker Ryan Edmundson.
