Alco building for sale

Staff writer

The Alco building in Hillsboro is up for sale, but as of Tuesday no buyers have stepped forward, said Hillsboro’s economic development director Clint Seibel.

Walmart representatives took a tour of the Alco building recently, but Seibel added, “They decided to build their own building.”

A developer has already broken ground at 605 Orchard Drive for the Walmart Neighborhood Market expected to open in the spring, Seibel said.

Alco filed for bankruptcy in October and has hired a real estate group to sell its 21,000-square-foot stores and former corporate headquarters in Abilene, Kansas, a press release said. Alco has nearly 200 stores in 23 states throughout the central United States.

A&G Realty is also accepting bids to acquire the leases for stores not owned by Alco, including the Hillsboro store, which is owned by a real estate company in Plano, Texas, according to city officials.
