These accident reports were released this past week by law enforcement agencies:
HIGHWAY PATROL
US-56 at K-15/Bison Rd.
Alicia D. Warwick, 38, Peabody, was killed and 14-year-olds Jason Warwick-Ortiz and Gabe Glenn of Peabody were seriously injured at 9:50 p.m. Saturday when their northbound 2005 Toyota Camry slammed into the trailer of a 2021 Freightliner semi in dense fog.
Semi driver Alfred S. Johnson, 34, Hockley, Texas, suffered no apparent injuries.
The boys were taken to Wesley Medical Center, Wichita.
A Kansas Highway Patrol accident report said Warwick had failed to stop at a stop sign.
SHERIFF
US-77 north of 140th Rd.
Two northbound vehicles hit deer and then ran off the road to the right at 9:50 p.m. Dec. 6, according to two of seven accident reports released Thursday.
Luke Watkins, 18, rural Burns, hit a deer with his 2018 Ford F-150, which remained drivable with damage to its driver’s side.
Clay R. Morris, 26, Fort Riley, also hit a deer with his 2020 Honda Civic. It, too, remained drivable with damage to its front.
US-56/77/K-150 roundabout
Swerving to avoid a group of deer at 6 a.m. Dec. 9, Brock N. Steadman, 22, Pretty Prairie, drove a 2024 Chevrolet Silverado 3500 through the roundabout, over three curbs, and into a yield sign.
The pickup, owned by Phillips Southern Electric Co. of Wichita, sustained disabling damage to its undercarriage and was towed.
Ryan J. Zimmerman, 28, St. George, was a passenger.
US-77 north of 120th Rd.
Marcus Schmeidler, 24, Great Bend, hit a deer at 5:40 p.m. Dec. 10 with a 2021 Ford Explorer owned by James A. Schmeidler of the same address.
Alyssa C. Keller, 23, of a different Great Bend address was a passenger.
The Explorer sustained disabling damage to its front and was towed.
US-56 north of 210th Rd.
Myra K. Adam, 61, Herington, hit a deer at 6:37 a.m. Dec. 10 with her 2012 Ford Explorer, which remained drivable with damage along its driver’s side.
Noah Adam, an apparent child from the same address whose age was redacted by the sheriff’s department, was a passenger.
K-15 south of 140th Rd.
A 2023 Ford Expedition carrying what appear to be seven Clay Center Community High School students inexplicably crossed the center line at 8:49 a.m. Dec. 11, ran off the road to the right, went through a ditch and over a concrete bridge structure, and crashed into a barbed wire fence.
The van, owned by the school district and driven school counselor Robert A. Moran, 53, Clay Center, was destroyed, according to deputy Bruce Burke’s report.
Passengers were identified as 16-year-old Caiberi J. Shaffer; 17-year-olds Jackson R. Beems, Seth J. Hovland, and Tyler L. Wright; and 18-year-olds Jacobie W. Graves and Mason S. Lanter, all of Clay Center.
No injuries were reported.
Burke’s report confusingly listed the driver both as not responsible and as driving inattentively.
Undersheriff Larry Starkey said inattentive driving was the cause.
Indigo Rd. north of 140th Rd.
Emery R. Dalke, 17, rural Hillsboro, hit a deer with an unspecified model 1992 Toyota at 8:55 p.m. Dec. 11.
The Toyota, owned by Dale Dalke of the same address, sustained disabling damage to its front and hood and, according to deputy Clayton Philpott’s report, was pushed half a mile and parked along 140th Rd. after the accident.
Cooper J. Hefley, 17, Hillsboro, was a passenger.
