These accident reports were released this past week by law enforcement agencies:

SHERIFF

US-56 east of Remington Rd.

Brett D. Frye, 25, Galva, was unable at 8:10 p.m. April 3 to avoid hitting four large chunks of concrete that had come loose from US-56, according to a report released Friday.

His 2013 Hyundai Elantra remained drivable with damage to its left front and undercarriage.

The chunks were removed from the roadway, and Kansas Department of Transportation was notified.

240th Rd. west of Old Mill Rd.

Kaleb M. Blank, 20, Herington, was ticketed for reckless driving and speeding after he wrecked a 2012 GMC Sierra while intentionally fishtailing the truck at 8:30 p.m. April 5.

The truck, owned by Barbara J. Schlesener of Hope, ran off the road to the right and rolled onto its side. It sustained disabling damage to its driver’s side and was towed.

Three teenagers were passengers: Silas R. Nickel, 15, rural Ramona; Emily M. Gilkey, 16, Hillsboro; and Rachel A. Schafer, 17, Hillsboro.

All were checked for injury by Marion ambulance medics but declined to be taken to a hospital.

K-15 south of 120th Rd.

Jeffrey L. Herzet, 54, Marion, hit a deer at 1:50 a.m. April 8 with his 2013 Volvo S80, which remained drivable with damage to its front and hood.

US-50 east of Old Mill Rd.

Trepton E. Songony, 34, Herington, hit a deer at 4:51 a.m. April 8 with a 2012 Chevrolet Silverado owned by Agridime LLC of Hope.

The pickup remained drivable with damage to its front and hood.

Remington Rd. north of 270th Rd.

Part of a load being hauled by a 15-year-old in a northbound Novak Farms pickup fell off at 4 p.m. April 9 and hit a southbound Marion Marble and Granite heavy truck.

The pickup, a 2013 Chevrolet Silverado 3500, was driven on an agricultural permit by Silas R. Nickel, rural Ramona.

The heavy truck, a 2016 Ford F-550 driven by Brent Cleeton, 40, Marion, sustained disabling damage to its front end.

Matthew L. Druse, 38, Marion, was a passenger.

Nighthawk Rd. south of 150th Rd.

Owen D. Spencer, 17, rural Marion, hit a deer at 8:30 p.m. April 9 with a 2020 Chevrolet Malibu owned by Douglas J. Spencer of the same address.

The car remained drivable with damage to its passenger side and undercarriage.

US-50 east of Yarrow Rd.

Rongsheng Gong, 55, Corona, California, hit a deer at 9 p.m. April 9 with a 2022 Freightliner semi-trailer truck owned by Dazheng Enterprises, Eastvale, California.

Damage to the left front of the tractor and its trailer was characterized as minor.

US-56 at K-15 / Holly Rd.

Two drivers had to be extricated and one taken to a Wichita hospital after a three-vehicle accident at 1:34 p.m. April 10.

Maleiah G. Bartel, 18, rural Hillsboro, had been southbound on K-15 when she turned her 2013 Ford Edge west onto US-56 and into the path of a westbound 2011 Chevrolet Silverado owned and driven by Kyle D. Funk, 42, rural Hillsboro.

The vehicles collided, careening into an eastbound 2020 Peterbilt semi-trailer truck that had been stopped, waiting to turn north onto K-15.

Bartel and Funk had to be extricated. Bartel was taken by Marion ambulance to Wesley Medical Center, Wichita. Funk also was listed as injured but was not reported to have been taken to a hospital.

Both vehicles were listed as destroyed. Bartel’s was owned by Jennifer G. Bartel of the driver’s address.

The semi, owned by Custom Equipment of Kansas City, Missouri, and driven by Colton M. Carney, 27, Salina, sustained disabling damage to its left front and trailer and was towed.

Deputy Landis Goodman’s report blamed the accident on inattentive driving by Bartel, but no tickets were issued.

Main St. north of 3rd St., Tampa

Lavae J. Koehn, 45, rural Durham, backed a 2006 Honda Odyssey out of a diagonal parking space and into the side of a southbound 2004 GMC Sierra 1500 at 2 p.m. April 10.

The GMC, owned and driven by Wilburt E. Backhus, 90, Tampa, sustained damage characterized as minor to its passenger side.

Damage to the Honda, owned by Roy L. Davis of a different Durham address, also sustained damage characterized as minor — in this case, to its left rear.

Deputy Landis Goodman’s report blamed the accident on inattentive driving and improper backing by Koehn, but no tickets were issued.

The accident was not reported until the next morning.

HILLSBORO

Alley behind Dale’s Supermarket

Fifteen-year-old Clayton R. Jantz of Hillsboro backed a 1998 Chevrolet Cavalier from a parking lot into a 2006 Jeep Liberty that had stopped suddenly at 7:06 p.m. Friday to wait for pedestrians.

Both the Chevy, owned by Randall S. Jantz of the same address, and the Jeep, owned by Grant L. Myers and driven by Jacie E. Myers, 21, of the same McPherson address, sustained damage characterized as minor.

Jantz, an employee at the supermarket, had seen the Jeep but thought it was going to continue past a supermarket door that opens directly onto the alley.

He reportedly left the scene and called his parents. No tickets were issued.

MARION

Casey’s General Store parking lot

Fourteen-year-old Morgan A. Dixon of Marion was ticketed for being an unlicensed driver in a hit-and-run accident after she put a parked 2015 Chevrolet Trax into drive instead of reverse at 4:15 p.m. April 4 and slammed it into a firewood rack and a trash can at Casey’s General Store, according to an accident report released Monday.

The car, owned by Michael A. Giacobbi of Goodland, sustained damage characterized as minor to its right front. Sharon K. Paxman, 61, Tribune, and Rodney Stultz, 7, of the driver’s Marion address were passengers.

No charges related to leaving the scene of the accident were reported.
