REPORTED
These accident reports were released this past week by law enforcement agencies:
SHERIFF
US-77 north of 170th Rd.
John P. Thissen, 59, Herington, hit a deer with his 2016 Toyota Avalon at 11 p.m. Aug. 13.
Kelli K. Thissen, 60, of the same address was a passenger. Neither reported injury, but the car sustained disabling damage to its left front and hood and was towed.
US-77 south of 140th Rd.
Devin H. Soyez, 21, rural Marion, was injured at 4:14 p.m. Aug. 15 when a 1994 Ford F100 pickup he was driving was rear-ended by a 2019 Mitsubishi Outlander owned and driven by Casey B. Galbraith, 27, Lakewood, Colorado.
The pickup, owned by Cathy D. Martin of Marion, was propelled off the road to the right and overturned against a fence owned by Jeff Ensey. Deputy Aaron Christner’s report classified the pickup as destroyed.
Soyez was taken by ambulance to St. Luke Hospital, Marion, for treatment of what were termed disabling injuries.
Galbraith was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of intoxicants, transporting an open container of alcohol, operating an unregistered vehicle, and possessing marijuana.
Additional charges of aggravated battery and battery of a law enforcement officer were sought after she allegedly kicked and bit Sheriff Jeff Soyez several times.
The sheriff, a relative of the injured driver, said he had stood off from the investigation but intervened after a confrontation between Galbraith and Undersheriff Larry Starkey.
Galbraith, who according to Christner’s report refused to be tested for drugs and alcohol, allegedly was angrily demanding a ride to a distant destination.
Galbraith’s sport-utility vehicle sustained disabling front-end damage and was towed.
Galbraith remained in county jail this week in lieu of $10,000 surety bond.
US-50 west of Sunflower Rd.
Teng Ma, 35, Midland, Texas, hit a deer at 11:22 p.m. Aug. 15 and did minor damage to his 2022 Toyota Sienna, rented from Hertz.
Remington Rd. north of 260th Rd.
Loreen K. Hett, 58, Marion, hit a deer at 10:09 a.m. Aug. 17 with her 2017 Jeep Cherokee, which sustained damage to its left side but remained functional.
Limestone Rd. south of 170th Rd.
Two teenage drivers from rural Hillsboro, each driving with a farm permit and trying to avoid the other as they crested a hill at 4 p.m. Aug. 17, swerved to the left instead of right, resulting in damage to the right front and hoods of their vehicles.
Karley R. Loewen, 17, was driving a 1999 Pontiac Grand Prix owned by Richard P. Loewen of her address. Kayden M. Morales, 14, was driving a 2014 GMC Acadia owned by Michael E. Morales of his address. Staci R. Morales, 42, also of the same address, was a passenger.
Both vehicles remained operational. No citations were issued.
HILLSBORO
Grand Ave. east of Ash St.
Attempting to make way for a turning truck by backing up at a stop sign, Galen W. Penner, 72, rural Hillsboro, backed the ball hitch of his 2012 Chevrolet C25 pickup into the grill of a 2013 Chevrolet Cruise stopped behind him at 11:45 a.m. Aug. 16.
The Cruise, owned by Barkman Honey and driven by Samantha M. Slater of Marion, sustained damage described as minor. No citations were issued.

300 block of William St.
Pedestrian Walter Hein, 75, Marion, walked into the side of a 2006 Pontiac Montana minivan driven by Sharon Kelsey, 77, of Marion at 9:43 a.m. Saturday. A private vehicle took Hein to St. Luke Hospital for minor injuries.
