8 runnes quality for state

Peabody-Burns High School cross-country had eight athletes qualify for state at the Mound City 2A regional meet Saturday.

The boys’ team placed third with a score of 64 points. Olpe was second in the team standings with 57 points, and Berean Academy won the boys’ team division with 29 points.

Lauren Pickens also won a chance to compete at state with a second-place finish in the girls’ division. The state meet will take place at Wamego. The girls will compete at 9 a.m. and the boys will run at 10 a.m.

Lauren Pickens led the four individual PBHS girl’s competitors and medaled in second place with a time of 16 minutes, 23 seconds. Beatrice Caldarella ran the course in 20:18 and finished 36th. Kelsie Noble finished 40th with a time of 21:29 and Amanda Pickens was 41st with a time of 21:29.

Aaron Topham led the boys’ team. Topham earned a fifth-place medal with a time of 17:13. Sheldon Wiebe finished 11th with a time of 17:34; Jacob Simmonds, 14th, 17:40; Joshua Klarmann, 17th, 17:48; Curtis Frederick, 29th, 18:51; Matt Hiebert, 35th, 19:14; Steffen Pospiech, 44th, 20:17.
